Shin turn downing Ai was great from the standpoint of not being clichéd, he was decisive and to the point. How many times have you seen a male lead in an anime show do that? It was refreshing to see! Usually male leads are wishy washy, keep sending mixed signals to the girls, and dragging things out.

However, I also felt sympathy for Ai (one of my favorite girls) when she cried at being turned down. I hope the writers still keep her engaged in the storyline and have her find happiness.

I know some posters were bored with the middle or didn’t enjoy the cute scenes of Noe x Shin. I enjoyed their chemistry together. Let the characters have some fun and happiness, usually its good to have a payoff for all the set up in the story.

Besides, the “good times” are usually a prelude to set up future turmoil and drama, so for those who are losing interest, try sticking with it. I sense it’s going to get interesting in the remaining episodes.

When Hiromi was insinuated about Noe’s ability to capture Shin’s heart with her innocent face, I was going, “No!! Don’t go to the dark side like Shin’s mother.” Wow, what great irony into interject into the show, becoming that which you hate (i.e. Hiromi treating Noe the same way Shin’s mother treated her).

I felt joy, sadness, tension, relief, and exasperation in this episode, I enjoy how this show evokes a broad range of feelings. I also love how the Raigomaru story paralleled Ai’s rebound from rejection and Shin’s metaphorical flight into new life territory. That’s why I gave Episode 8 a 10/10. Great stuff!

I agree with you there. Without resorting speculation or spoilers, all I can say that if Hiromi wants to grow and rise above her own adversity, she has to really rise to the challenge. Even if the temptation is to go to immoral avenues for comfort or to become bitter and jealous like her stepmother, she has to turn away! Another poster here mentioned that Hiromi hasn't done anything to "earn" the audience's approval. In fact, he/she states that Hiromi is in danger of becoming a protagonist who earns the audience's pity...but little else.

I don't know how relationship pairings go but in a general overview of this series so far, I hope that she does gain her own strength. This might happen during the 2nd season...but who knows what Hiromi will do? I personally am rooting for her to confront her challenges and to grow! That's what the best stories are all about. Men and women confronting and overcoming real life challenges and conflicts! They give us all a sense of hope and encouragement in our RLs.

Sigh... Obvious heading to a Hiromi win... Guarenteed 100% now, since Noe did mention that Shin will be the one to return her tears, which will happen once he leaves her for Hiromi. In result, heart breaks, lots of cries, and so on. Man, I was anticipating this episode but it didn't meet my expectations. True Tears started out so well.. I just don't feel it anymore. Maybe my expectations of it are wayy too high now.

Ai got killed off. It was well done and realistic, but the fact that she's being casted aside.. They might as well have introduced Hiromi and Noe as the only competitors from the start. But Ai did provide some good sights and scenes in comparison to Hiromi and Noe. Ai's scenes were the most fun to watch IMO, especially because she had the guts to do all that she did.

Yeah, Hiromi is Emo. She gets mad about Shin not realizing her feelings and yet she's too stubborn to admit it on her own. Basically, she wants him to confirm it for her -_-. The scene at the preview, I think I saw her undoing her shirt. Will True Tears go to such lengths to demonstrate Hiromi's mentality? I doubt it. I doubt that anything will even happen between Jun and Hiromi at where they are. Hiromi's weak, but she's not stupid. She should know exactly why Jun's going out with her, what Shin's situation is, and she might get discouraged from all the sources (Shin's mom, fact that Noe is going out with Shin), but she won't give up.

Noe is boring to me now. Too soft and repetition of what I saw and came to expect of her character. All that Raigomaru talk's got to go. For some reason, Noe doesn't shine very much for me.
Noe definitely isn't strong. She simply conceals all of her tears and all the pains or whatever she wanted to cry out, inside herself. That's real weak. Real strength is when you can actually cry what you need to cry out when you feel the need to do so. Of course, the act would seem much more softer that way, but the accumulated tears and stress inside can kill you. It's simply a bad habit.

Conclusion: Hiromi and Noe are both weak in different ways. Ai is also weak when it comes to dealing with her rejection, but her character is obviously very strong and dignified. I'd personally say she is most deserving of Shin, but when it comes to who deserves what in the more broad term, Hiromi and Noe probably have gone through a lot worse than a high school crush's rejection. Yet I have sympathy for Hiromi, who I just know is going to get Shin in the end, and will overcome her problems. Noe will probably cry and get over it, but as a result, she will have gained her tears back.
Ai-chan? Meh, either feel sorry for Miyo and then go out with him again, exactly the same way it all started in the beginning, or come to terms with everything and start moving out of the three-girl spotlight. She won't become emo. Her character is a strong one. I'll bet that something will happen which will actually let her open up to Miyo instead of just idling with him to get closer to his friend.

What is there to say? Being an Aiko fan, everything that I really wanted to say has already been said by others in this thread. It's not exactly her losing that upsets me, but the fact that they wrote her off 5 episodes before the conclusion whereas the HiromixShinxNoe love triangle is practically guaranteed to endure to the end of the series; which breaks my heart. It's criminal really. Win or lose, Aiko should have lasted until the last episode. She deserved at least that much. Love polygon anime are a plague with no cure. They are produced year after year in droves, and I always root for the same character - the girl who stands no chance. Why!? Why am I attracted to these characters so much? I can only assume that some higher power is f***ing with my head because it happens far too often to be coincidence.

NoexShin is apparently best in small doses because while I loved the stone scene in episode 7, their screentime together in episode 8 was quite boring as many others have stated. So boring in fact, that I will end my commentary on them with that note.

Which finally brings me to our third lovely contestant. Shinji Ikari's female equivalent. The ever optimistic and happy-go-lucky Yuasa Hiromi. I am in full agreement with RevRayCool. She has indeed become a "tragic princess". She is the Yin to Noe's Yang. She is the character that we have all seen a billion times - the perfect class idol who just so happens to be dying on the inside. Things never go right for her. Her world is crashing down all around her. She is a vampire who will feed off of our sympathies while simultaneously digging herself a grave of pity and self-loathing. What is Hiromi going to do once her lies and deceitful behavior begin to work against her? She will run. She will run and Shin will climb aboard his white steed and go galloping off after her. Just like the good boy that he is.

Episode 8 was the low point of this series (hopefully). It was still pretty good as far as episodes go, so I gave it an 8.

I liked the way they developed the story in this episode.

First they dealt with Aiko. Even though she is pretty much out of the contest now, I still think she can play a significant role in the story, and that's what I am looking forward to.

As with Hiromi, so many times in this type of series, the tragic character is underdeveloped and the story ends up losing some of its meaning and impact. I liked the way how they have pretty much saved this issue till the last since it gives time for viewers to get to know Hiromi and other characters, making it easier for viewers to connect with her and sympathize with what she is going through.

So far, this series has been very solid, and I think they will probably keep it up until the end.

This was a very good episode, and I agree that it's settled the plot on a Noe/Hiromi thing (unless they really pull something suprising). Perhaps they will put Ai into sidestoryland with Nobu, who knows.

I really like Noe, even more so than before, but I don't know about Shin... He's still leaning more toward Hiromi, who is oddly become like Shin's mom... I still wonder what the real story of her birth is - I have a feeling it's not exactly what's been made out to be by Shin's mom.

Hiromi has always had that moody side, but the way she acted this episode was unusually terrible. Jeez.

Next episode will be more dramatic for sure.

I always believe that shin is not a punk so ai has been out of the picture ever since shin consider her as his best friend's girl friend.

That being said, ai-chan gain massivwe points with me for the last few episodes where the story fleshed out her love for shin though her actions.

Seems like shin is developing a stronger bond with noe assuming he is not into incest.

We have yet to confirm if hiromi is really shin's sister. And i feel like shin and hiromi both are into each other romantically but the incest possibility is in the way.

hiromi is jealous of noe just like how shin's mom is jealous of hiromi's mom. An indication of hiromi's romantic feelings for shin.

Hiromi is moody because her situation is pretty f'd up. 1st she has no where to live but with shin and his family. Shin's mom always make her feel like sh!t and hiromi can only suck it up. 2nd i think hiromi develope a thing for shin ever since that time when shin came to her rescue when she was crying in that forest area. And hiromi recently found out (probably from shin's mom after she move in) that she could be shin's (who she fell in love with as a child) sister. Having romanctic feelings for a potential sibling and the need to permanantly supress that - is crucial (assuming she is not into incest). So hiromi has no family, no one to rely on (maybe her friend from school but that friend can only help so much), and lots of other crap to to deal with. I say she has the right to be slightly moody even though it is not a very appealing attitude. She has been getting more bitchy bu i let her slide because i feel sorry for her.

So many angry reactions. That's an inherent problem with romances - viewers are often too focused on what they want for the characters, rather than how the characters feel and behave.

I agree.

I strongly disagree. Noe is not childish and immature. On the contrary, I think a more accurate description is child-like and highly perceptive. She is easily the "strongest" of the three girls, because she understands loss and accepts it without giving up hope. That is far from being immature, in my opinion.

*Sigh* How about trying to understand what the character is going through, rather than passing judgement? Hiromi might be making a mistake if that is indeed what happens, but it is a highly understandable mistake. I wouldn't think less of her because of it.

If feelings were that easy to control, life would indeed be very carefree. Stop moralising and start empathising. That's part of growing up, in my opinion.

My comments:
I don't think Shin is being dumb by avoiding Ai. That is the right thing to do, in my opinion. Everyone is in an awkward position at the moment, so it's right to let the commotion die down before talking again. It gives everyone room to think.

First loves are hard to forget. While it would be painful for Aiko to forget Shin, at least she now knows where she stands and can move on after this decisive moment. She'll gradually realise that she has taken Nobuse for granted, and slowly learn to love again.

Noe being sweet to Shin is very nice, but I'm afraid she is setting herself up for a major breakup. While Shin is evidently grateful that she has become his muse, it's clear from his expression that he doesn't feel romantic attraction towards her. He likes her certainly, but he is evidently not attracted to her in the same way he is attracted to Hiromi.

As for Hiromi, if the preview is to be believed, then I'd say she is behaving much like a rejected girl would. She's on a rebound. She's impulsively plunging into a relationship to forget Shin. In other words, she's being human. That is not something worthy of hate. Sympathy and emotional support is what she needs instead. In any case, Jun seems like a fairly smart guy, and somewhat emotionally experienced. I think he can probably tell that Hiromi is not serious about him, and would not take advantage of her as a result.

As for Shin's mother, it appears possible that she implied that Hiromi is an illegitimate daughter out of spite. Something doesn't add up, in the way Shin's father is treating Hiromi; ie, if Hiromi were really his daughter, he wouldn't have to remind her that she is part of their family.

Instead, it now seems possible that Shin's mother was acting out of jealousy, the same way Hiromi is reacting towards Noe. Quite possibly, Shin's mother could never shake the feeling that she is a "second-choice" compared to Hiromi's mother. For some reason, she suspects that her husband loved Hiromi's mother more than her, hence her jealousy. Hence her spiteful behaviour towards Hiromi. Again, it's part of being human. It's highly understandable, and I sympathise.

So there we have it. Like I've stated elsewhere, I'm following this show because of the characters rather than the plot. I think the characters have been developed very well so far. They are behaving like people would, in real life. Kudos to the writers and I hope the next few episodes will continue to keep me interested.

I'll take that bet! J/K

I am pretty sure, after all the happy moments between Noe and Shin in this episode, the next one will be either the climax or start going downhill for Noe X Shin. If Noe is going to end up with anybody, it will probably be just her brother.

I think their parents would need to get involved, so I don't think it is a viable option for them right now.

I don't really think Aiko is completely out of the running just yet (at least I really hope she isn't). I still get the feeling she started dating Nobuse out of pity more than anything else, b/c she saw that he's a good dude, but she's been trying to dump him for a couple eps now... it's bound to happen before the end of the series. She doesn't seem like the type to just accept her fate.

While I enjoy Noe's innocence and cuteness... all her talk about flying and looking to the sky and such is so much nonsense within the context of normal life... it's not even a likable eccentricity... it's just pointless conversation, and pretends to give her depth. I swear to god, it makes me think about Air Gear it's so out there. I also still have some distaste for her left from when she demanded that Shin tell her that he liked her... seriously, who asks something like that? o_o

hiromi is just a can of worms i'm not even going to open.

This episode was kinda boring, yeah, but it was needed.

Yeah they're probably going to try and have sex or something, but the problem is will Hiromi really go on with it?

I feel sorry for Miyokichi the most.

Well Shin and Noe is kinda cute together.

My post is kinda pointless, isn't it?

I still enjoy this show but it's starting to stagnate if you ask me. Another Asatte no Houkou; a show that promises brilliance at the start and can't quite live up to its promise.

Hiromi is a rather by-the-book character and looks more and more like a villainess with each passing episode; Noe isn't really developing, and Shin is still rather stuffy. Ai was a decent character but she has been written off. It would take a Hiromi ending for me to actually put this show in the waste bin - but regardless of how it ends, this show is starting to get more and more formulaic. It may seem unique by anime standards but it's downright typical TV drama fare.

Still, it's a formula that usually works, so hopefully it will remain an above average show that is worth watching. Maybe my expectations were set too high?

How were they high? We've just experienced through the horrors of Myself ; Yourself, so I thought no one would have high expectations anymore.

Anyways, I also had high expectations, for the reasons that there hasn't been a non-fantasy/non-action/regular romance/drama for me to enjoy in a while, so I'm hoping this one will be good. I'm praying that it will end well....

Make no mistake, I like this show and am hopeful that it will end well. Barring a disaster (i.e. Hiromi) this one looks like a keeper. I wouldn't call it original but it has good entertainment value.

Hmm... confirmed Aiko is also a childhood friend of Shin's, as I suspected. Good to see my osana-najimi radar is still functioning perfectly, lol.

Another thing I'd like to see, but would probably won't happen, is Aiko's past. As far as I can tell, she's living alone, and working her restaurant to support herself. No sign of any parents or relatives, or heck, even workers at her place. And she goes to her school in the daytime? My respect for her has risen considerably because of this, and I'd like to know more about her. Sadly, we probably won't get it, as it has next to impact on the plot whatsoever, but one can always hope, no?

And what do you know? While the characters keep saying Hiromi looks awful like her mom, it's kind of ironic that her personality is almost an exact clone of Shin's mom. I mentioned before that Shin's mom would've loved to have a daughter like Hiromi, but now I bet she would've doted on her even more than Shin if the past wasn't an issue. They really are peas from the same pod.

(Of course, this opens up the question... is Hiromi's personality the way it is now because of the way Shin mom's treats her? Or is it because of another reason? Or is that how she's always been?)

As for the episode contents itself, being a fanatic about childhood friends, I just can't help but gush at Hiromi's dream scene. That, and for some reason it reminded me of my favourite character in Ever17. (She didn't quite say what Hiromi said, but close enough lol)

But what I probably really liked most about this episode is that during the middle of it, I was thinking, isn't Shin ignoring Hiromi again? Why haven't they spoken to each other yet? And next scene that came up, was them talking in the bathroom. Coincidence? If it was the first time that happened in the series, maybe, but since it isn't (Shin bringing up to Nobuse the reason for him shopping with Aiko for example) that just goes to prove that the writers are really doing a bang-up job. They're like psychic lol.

As for the preview, I don't trust it one bit. I've learned my lesson last time... the preview writers are MASTERS of deception. They trick you into thinking that the next episode is about a certain something, but it really isn't once you see the episode. I for one aren't taking it at face value.

What this episdoe did though was it TKO'ed one girl and another is down for the count. It was evident by Shin's actions in the beginning that he doesn't see Aiko in that way whatsoever, so her doing all the stuff she did to get his attention was getting a bit repititive. Glad she's out of the picture, as honestly, the Jun-Hiromi-Shin-Noe love square is already complicated enough for it to fit in one cour, and having Aiko complicating matters would've needed another cour to explore. Won't be the last time we see her though, as they still have to tie up loose ends with Nobuse.

And Noe... everything is going well for her now, which is 'just as planned' for a Hiromi ending. Of course, the writers might pull a twist in the end (of which I have no complaints if they did unlike a certain other show), but I find it unlikely.

Edit:
Speaking of high expectations at the beginning and disappointment in the end, for me Sola was the first that came in mind.

Not for TT for me though, as beyond the resolution of the love triangles, I'm also interested in knowing the past of quiet a few characters (most especially the previous generation). And between five episodes, it looks like its perfect timing for me to resolve all of the above.

@DanielSong
I guess you better give up while you're ahead lol, considering what most of the signs point to lol.

I'm glad Shin cut off Aiko really freaking quickly. I was worried that this episode would have had some garbage with the two of them going back and forth but it was dealt with far better and faster then I had expected.

Hiromi is obviously an absurdly jealous bitch. I hope that bike she's riding on flies off a cliff or something equally fatal (that doesn't involve Noe's brother of course, he'd end up perfectly safe and sound in the end). I can't even see what the hell Shin sees in this girl, she's incredibly lifeless. Yes, it's a given what she's been through, but she's still pushing that act so it just continues to get worse.

And god bless Noe, she's the only character I actually adore in this show. So honest with herself and Shin, and so in love. It's immensely endearing to listen to her flubber on over Shin. It's going to break my heart if the two of them don't stay together. I hope that doesn't happen in any way. I really, really, hope it doesn't.

Watched Episode 8.

It's pretty amazing how, week in week out, True Tears delivers human emotions in such a subtle, yet undeniably real manner. It's a fairly no-frills story being given a fairly no-frills treatment, but it focuses on its main hook, and does it pretty damned well. It's one of the few series I've never stopped wanting more of, one of those series I'd probably kill a day just to marathon if I'd missed it beforehand. Waiting for a new episode every week just doesn't do this story justice.

9/10. Blog article coming soon.

EDIT: In addition, all this "it's obvious Noe's the one, no, it has to be Hiromi, no it's Noe, it's Hiromi" reminds me way too much of the "Ayu's the one, no Nayuki's the one" back-and-forth back in the Kanon (2006) days. Even worse, perhaps, since this time there's no "game vets" to add some gravitas to the back-and-forth with some informed justifications.

Me, I'm a Hiromi shipper, but I'm staying out of this Noe vs. Hiromi back-and-forth.
