Probably going after many of the more serious anime fans in the west; not the casual type, so lots of teens and young adults in English speaking markets is my guess. Even still, they gave it a rating of TV PG for violence. The show is at least that, at the most, TV 14. I thought it might get the rating of 13 and up (I dunno, do people know what I'm talking about; the ratings they usually put on R1 anime DVDs?).

First volume arrived yesterday morning. Yes i did say i wasen't going to order it, though i couldn't help myself - the cover is even more god awful then in images, though its all worth it just to have the first Omake DVD Special.

Well, just got to watching some of the dubs. At first I was kind of put off, but then I just had to forget all about the Japanese VA's (they were firmly implanted into my head) and watch it like I had never seen it before.
Once I did this I found myself enjoying it, it wasn't EXCEPTIONAL work by any means, but it was good enough to keep me satisfied. I haven't had a chance to check out the, supposedly, awful cover . |

The box art for volume 02 and the art box have been released.
Volume 02 cover Artbox I know whats happening, they knew how much i hated the first volume cover, so they're placing Dori & Gura on the second to please me.. they're doing alright. Though i know for sure i won't be buying the Artbox. & seriously.. WHAT'S WITH ALL THE GRASS?!?

Ok, I'm more confused on how to really spell Eruruu's name. I'm used to "Eruruu" from Yesy's fansubs. But I understand how the whole r's and l's are almost the same thing in Japanese, so it could also be interpreted as Eluluu. (And as someone mentioned, for the distinction between the sisters for dumb Americans =)
So it gets worse... Out of curiosity, I went to wikipedia to see what they had on Utawarerumono. They spell it Elulū (the last "u" with a macron). Since I primarily speak English, and studied french for four years, I've had no experience with the macrons. Is this also valid as a spelling? Anyway, I just had to vent... =) I prefer Yesy's spelling of the name. And I'm buying the dvd's to support good anime in the States, not because I like dubbing hehe |

Art box...
If this gets licenced for Australia, I really hope that the boxset art isn't going to look as bad as that... But I would buy it anyway, ugly or not T-T And yeah, I don't understand what they're doing with the marketing. From what I've seen (trailers, covers, description), if I had not watched this for free, the marketing for this would not make me want to buy it. I guess ADV is aiming for a different target audience... |

I just find it hilarious that the dubbing company probably browsed these forums, kept coming across stuff about the twins like The Sperm Song, and decided that they must be popular, since they're the first and only characters featured so far on the DVD covers! The first one was just Hakuoro's mask, and so the second one has the twins in a potentially twincest pose!

That cover for volume 2 is almost the same as one of the Japanese DVD covers; they use the same image of Dori and Gura. I like that they used that image of them for the DVD cover. Let's hope we see some Karura, Touka, Eruuruu, and Aruuruu.

I like the dub. I watch more subbed than dubbed, but I like the dub. Some dubs I prefer over the sub (FMP series). Some characters I don't like with the dub version (Hakauro, Benewi). But I like Eruuruu, Dori, Gura, and Oboro for the dub. I have yet to watch DVD 2 with Karura, I hope they did a good job with her.

The dubs were done well, I'll give them that much. However, the Japanese VA's were just so phenomenally impressive that I just really cannot watch with the dubs. I just got my friend into this series the other day, and he feels the same way. He would normally watch dubs, for the most part, but he can't bring himself to watch the dubs after he heard the Japanese VA's.
All the Japanese VA's sound like they had so much more emotion, and I was drawn to them. I, for one, did not feel the same effect for Aruuruu. She was so cute in the Japanese version, but I had no draw to her whatsoever in the English dub. It was not bad, but I just did not feel an emotional impact. My friend did really thank me for introducing him to this series. He thought it was just so fantastic, that he bought himself whatever was available on DVD, too. Now the wait for Aug. 24...

The dub is much more acceptable than the Melancholy of Suzimiya Haruhi dub, and much better in fact. Probably the best dub I've heard was Cowboy Bebop, and I haven't heard a better dub since then. I do agree, the Japanese Seiyuu for Eruruu is cuter than the English dubbed voice, however.

But, I'll give the Utawarerumono dub a passing grade at best, and will probably be next "best" dubbed anime since Bebop. |
