Hi-Res images tend to look much crisper when viewed at smaller sizes. That, and they tend to be easier to shop while still maintaining quality.
How do you think they make such convincing nude filters and shops?

Building on what LoweGear said, higher resolution makes it easier to make wallpapers, colages (did I spell that right? Been a long time since I've seen it spelled), and other such effects. The smaller the image, the less pixels people have to work with when making something from them.
And people have been asking for bigger versions of images since long before other people started asking why people need them.
