The intention isn't to deny speculation though. You can perfectly talk about various aspects of the show while still keep in mind we just scratching the surface of a lot of things.

On another topic, I do hope we get to see the new OP next episode. I think it's a good time to do so.

Au contraire (just to jump in here; not directed at you), it's more like novel readers need to shut up because they're getting awfully close to hinting that some major development is going to come down the road that might change your opinion about the characters... which, okay, is not exactly a surprise, but at the same time is out of topic for this thread.

Everyone can judge the characters in the anime based on what they've seen so far. Of course it's wise to keep an open mind and consider that there is still more of the story to come. But novel readers shouldn't take it so personally when people start criticizing characters in the anime based on what has been shown so far in the anime. They're not judging the novels because we're not talking about the novels. When characters get more development in the anime, reasonable people will revise their opinions accordingly.

Novel readers need to remember AnimeSuki anime thread rules: absolutely zero hints of any kind about future content. Yes that means even vague insinuations about what's to come can get you banned, so it's better to not even go there.

I think that Chosen Hero is overstating Emilia's weaknesses, but there certainly is room for criticism here. And I disagree with Obelisk implying that Emilia is far less generic than all the female characters in SAO - Some of the SAO female characters are more interesting to me than Emilia has been so far.

Asuna: a kind rich girl who wants to break free from her shackling life and her fiancée. She’s also a supposedly badass player in MMO game(s) and later goes crazy about the MC and becomes no more than a Princess Peach and background character until she gets her own arc where she gets to show more of her kindness (which we already knew). Even her own arc is not interesting because of her, but because of other new characters (not gonna spoil it).

Yui: no more than a loli character used for plot device and for the MC-couple to play house and parents.

Silica: even more useless moeblob compared to Yui. She’s there just to add eyecandy and harem member.

Lisbeth: exists solely as MC’s smith and also to fawn over him as another harem member.

Sachi: do I even need to explain her?

Suguha: her role is nothing more than MC’s cousin and (yet another) harem member/love interest in the 2nd arc who got trolled because the two guys that she likes turned out to be the same person (guess who?).

Sakuya: another character who fawns over the MC

Alicia: *read above description*

Shinon: A rather decent character with good arc, until she's reduced into just another harem member fawning and blushing over the MC. Her badass-level decreased too after the MC "conquered" her in her own arc.

Yuuki: A genuinely good and interesting character with her own story and free from becoming another harem member *phew*

Most of them are just not interesting as characters (if not downright boring). That’s why I watched SAO mostly for its story and answers rather than following the characters. Compare them with Emilia who has both big goals for her future to win election and what she intent and will do for the people once she won (as part of the big plot) as well as mysterious past, and probably some twist (maybe involving some time loop about the question of who sent Subaru in the first place) as hinted in the show. That’s my take on it.

All the descriptions above come with a big note that most of those SAO characters benefited from us already watched and knew their own arcs while we barely scratched Emi’s character depth. I know this even though I’m not a source-reader at all. How? Because the anime already hinted it like crazy that there’s more to Emi than what’s already shown.

I think comparing Emilia to SAO characters is a bad idea because there are undoubtedly some people who happen to like those guys and might feel to need to defend them. So could we drop that angle?

Despite what some people believe, I'm pretty sure that most of the people who dislike Emilia will still dislike her by the end of the season.

Man, I really love Rem so far in this one, I wish something would happen to make Subaru care more about improving on his abilities instead of jumping into everything just to get wrecked because he has no skills.

It's not he keeps leaping into anything on purpose, rather things just happen one after another around him that require his immediate attention. So he doesn't get much time or oppouinties in the way to do any of that. Even if he did it depending on his appitude it would at least several months to become decent at whatever he's doing.

I'm not sure what you mean by skills but in terms of physical abilities, his fight with the slasher woman showed they are good enough. I think it's good that Subaru needs to rely on other, stronger, people for help.

If you mean knowledge or magical abilities then yeah, that would be nice.

Yes I meant magical abilities, my bad for not specifying. He seems to only know how to do like one thing. Plus without trying to spoil something, he just kinda got wrecked a bit in a recent episode.

That's because he was only taught one spell and that takes up almost all Subaru's mana due to having no training in controlling it before that point.

Besides he damaged his mana gate from overusing it against the mabeasts in the last arc and forcibly restoring mana with that fruit in succesion. If he continues to use magic it will most likely threaten his life as it is now. In episode 12 Emilia actually made a deal with Ferris/Felix to treat it which is why she brought Subaru to captial to begin with. He's apparently known as one of the best healers in the country.

So magic is a "no go" for now.

Okay so this episode showed why Rem is the Best girl, she literally was the only one who stay at Subaru's side after all what happened, supporting him no matter what and not asking for anything in return (not like Emilia). Subaru cleary responded to her feeling in some way and they are actually really close right now, I don't know what should happened to Subaru if it wasn't for Rem staying there.

And after all this sugar... the worst part came out, Betelgeuse showed up with a huge amount of death in his way, a lot of innocent people but what was the worst part is watching how Rem was there, laying in the ground without any sign of life after trying to fight.

Oh god this is getting better and better with each episode, this was literally a 10/10 episode.

Rem is just too adorable! Loved some of the segment she had with Subaru.

We also got new OP and ED theme songs, Crusch and Subaru's conversation along with the growing tension between them, and mysterious forces that really hit Subaru hard after he discovered what happened to Rem. Creepy ending though, seriously.

I wonder what Emilia is also doing at this point. Good episode overall.

• Subaru just REFUSES to learn. Its hilarious how a character can become the most despicable protagonist of a year in span of two episodes. I thought what happened would at least make him a better person but NO, he is less capable of learning than even Shinji Ikari. And Shinji at least had more reasons to be emo.
• So instead of dealing with political manipulations or having Subaru learn what an awful person he is and improve, not only we get him wooing other candidacy waifus, but now we are moving into territory of pure edge with that ending. Am I supposed to root for him or fear for him? Because at this point I pretty much want Subaru to fail. Because him succeeding will most likely lead to Emilia magically forgiving him all of his sins.
• Holy hell was the OP edgy. No way near as creative or good as the first OP which reminded me of Steins;Gate. Also if that was a glimpse of this arc's villain in the op then...ughhhh

Please start climbing back up, Re;Zero.

It's hard to take you seriously now with the lack of consistency and thought in the previous episode's review.

I like the series myself very much, but it is true that Subaru is hardly at his best right now.
