Aaaand there you have it. The reason why I disliked the translation of "Jealous Witch".
Episode 8: Spoiler:
less than 1 minute of research in wikipedia would have given the translators the foresight.

It was pretty fantastic how effective Subaru's cringe-worthy performance was used to express his obviously fake persona, and how obviously the people around him were picking up on it. I think this is the first case I've seen that a completely painful acting sequence was used intentionally and in a beautifully effective way to advance the story and character interactions.

Episode 8.
Another amazing episode, the studio is trying to fit as much content as they can without rushing the story, really good job. This time Subaru was literally trying too hard to hide his real feelings, those feelings that acumulated inside him thanks to all the resets and the bad experiences, deaths, pain, etc. I can obviously sounds like he's the same carefree guy as always, but deep inside is all to hide this pain. Emilia is for sure an amazing girl, she really understood the situation and finally let Subaru take a break of all that pain, pretty emotional sequence after the second half with Emilia and Subaru. Now he has all the strenght back to face the actual problem, the curse. On a side note, why the hell the subs are still wrong... I mean doing a little research can fix the issue and just get the correct name, pretty lazy job with a so important detail about the "witch of envy". |

My that was close, seeing Subaru act overly optimistic and energetic was giving me the feeling that he'd fail this run as well, but thanks to Emilia, Subaru was able to get some well deserved rest and recharge.
Also, Emilia telling Rem that Subaru is a good person seems to have worked, I don't think she sees him as a threat anymore...phew. Further information was given regarding Satella (she's way more dangerous than I thought, but considering the ability that Subaru has, it's to be expected ) and curses. Subaru now as enough clues and figured out that the shaman is in the nearby village...now to find the culprit. And he gets to go with both Ram and Rem

Oh wow, it's been a while since we've had an episode where Subaru didn't die, but we also got quite a bit of backstory.
I think my previous suspicions regarding the dog were correct. And we got quite a bit about the witch and magic. It's interesting what we find out about her and I'm wondering what her whole part to play here is. That was also quite a good amount of catharsis for Subaru after everything he's been through. Every child even the adult ones, sometimes need the maternal comfort of a lap to cry on and get everything all out. Well, it looks like it's on to face the mysterious shaman who is trying to destroy them. Quote:
But if they didn't know the outlay of the story and that they were going to use the seven deadly sins in this reference, then I can see why they used the adjective they were more common with.

So this episode pretty much spells out the thing that some people were unable to get last weeks - that Subaru's chuuni behavior is a front he uses to mask his fear and anguish.
Also some very nice info about the magic system and how works(just like with nasuverse seems to be based upon chakra system and the whole inward/outward mana idea). Also is it just me or did this imply that Shadow element is somehow connected to the witch or something? Since when Puck used that magic Subaru got flashbacks to the hand from last ep. Quote:

I did really like the small breakdown for Subaru. I didn't expect him to have this kind of problem, but it makes total sense. He went into this one desperate to save them and to get out of this one alive at the same time. Makes sense that he'd run himself ragged. Which frankly could have blown up in his face. Full credit to Emilia who kind of hadn't been as prevalent in the past couple loops to help Subaru out.
She doesn't understand everything, but she knows he's hurting. Doing what she can to let him vent out his pain and truly rest for even a short time. It is true that Subaru has little time and is in a hurry....but he has to proceed with time and care. A lot of interesting points. Subaru's shadow attribute could easily have been because of the witch. That her contact with him and granting this ability to him kind of corrupted or influenced his attribute into being shadow. In terms of the jealousy vs envy....I don't think it matters. Yeah, envy would be more commonly used and more accurate....but it's still a synonym. This isn't like translating plane as dragon. It's the same darn meaning. Going on about it is just plain nitpicking.

My only complaint for this episode was the way how Emilia told Subaru how it was hard for him... I usually don't try to find innuendo, but it looked and sounded erotic in this case, whereas I think simply petting his head and saying out loud it was hard for him would have been enough to make him burst.
Aside of that, pretty good emotional episode along with good exposition parts. The fact Subaru is dark aligned is definitely a red flag for him, considering his magic might not be that helpful. In fact, it is quite sinister when we consider his ties with Satella.

Some part of me just wants this arc to end already. I'm getting rather bored and somewhat depressed just watching Subaru go threw the meat grinder over and over. The first three episodes were nice, but now it's just like I want to see know what happened Old man Rom and Felt.

Save points in the game are rare and very far in between in the world. If you die while being so close to finishing point you have to start all the way back in the very beginning. All the monsters and traps you went past and fought off so hard have just respawned meaning you go through the gauntlet all over again. People who played said it induces rage like throwing your controller across the room and despair like you're just going to cry from dying and having to start the game all over. It's like banging your head against a brick wall. It's like torture and some "normal" gamers said that people who like these games are a bunch of masochist. However, if you do finally beat that one level where you died like 100 times it does feel awesome. It feels like your on top of the world and that you have defeated or overcome something that felt almost unbeatable. This is Dark Souls! Subaru's little situation is somewhat similar, but unlike us where we can just stop playing the game he can't. His sanity will be torn apart and destroyed if this keeps up and his soul will definitely darken if he doesn't get some help.

Yeah, he has an affinity with shadow and the smell of the witch is on him. Subaru has a huge disadvantage if he is trying to win over Roswaal and the maids. Definitely another great episode. I really do enjoy how the studio isn't rushing the pacing of the story and we can really enjoy these moments to its fullest potential.
We also get some developments that Subaru might be able to use magic in the future though. Can't wait to see how that will play out. Definite props to Subaru's seiyuu he is absolutely killing it.

I'd like to point out that even if the witches represent different sins, the other witches could then also be described as "the greedy witch, the gluttonous witch" etc etc.
Also, looks like the "the dog was the mastermind" camp is getting a few points here. |

Witch scent aside, I don't think they're prejudiced against shadow users. They may not associate elemental affinity and personality.
I wonder what Puck's coaching means. Can Puck use all elements? Can everyone, and affinity just means you'll be better with one of them? Or is it because Puck's a spirit? |
