Great analysis, but to be frank, I find the "woe is me, our doom is nigh" tone of the story a bit too ham-fisted, and more than a bit too melodramatic. I get that I'm supposed to feel this sense of crushing despair, but the story lays it on way too thick for me to take seriously. As for the Scouting Legion squad leader in Ep1, his behaviour would have warranted severe dsiciplinary action by a superior officer in any real-life army, regardless of the circumstances in which it occurred, so, again, it was too much for me to take seriously, even though I understood the intended dramatic effect.
All this has nothing to do with the way the anime itself worked, though. The action and the visceral violence on display were the chief draws for me, and they more than made up for the weaknesses in writing. And of course, who could possibly not love the OP? I would add that the despair the mangaka wants to inspire would feel genuine only when I come to care more deeply for his characters on a personal level. It's hard to feel outraged or violated when you don't yet care for the people who were hurt. The only time I felt anything like that was at the death of Eren's mother. |

The Mikasa of the anime version doesn't have the same eyes of the Mikasa of the manga. I'll provide two examples: This is Mikasa soon after the death of Eren's mother. You can see that her eyes are unequivocally empty. We even get a close up. Overall she looks completely retreated inside herself and devoid of any hope. Emptied of any emotions. Now this is Mikasa in the same scene in the anime: You can see that her eyes aren't empty at all, overall she just looks a bit sad. We haven't seen much of the adult Mikasa but I must admit that at first I didn't even recognized her. Disregarding the lipstick effect that makes her look older than how she's supposed to be (she's just 15 years old!), again her eyes aren't empty, and she looks more bored than anything else. Now Mikasa as she appears the first time in the training camp in the manga Her eyes are not as empty as before, but still empty, and rather than bored or unhappy she looks detached. She looks completely uncaring of her surroundings while at the same time emanating a dangerous vibe, like she's the kind of person that you'd better leave alone. At least that's the kind of impression that she gives to me. At any rate I think everyone can see the differences. PS: Looks like I've been ninjaed several times, but well, glad to know I'm not the only one who noticed that.

Which does make how old not only she but everyone looks a bit jarring. That being said, I've seen plenty of anime only watchers comment on how she's "dead inside" so it seems like the anime does get that point across,I'd say the seiyuu work helps on that front.

I'm still sad to hear how some anime only viewers still only think of Eren as an angsty emo kid...he's such a badass and cool character to me (though it doesn't help that the anime isn't doing that good a job at portraying him...then again it's still on episode 2 so it can be corrected I hope).

I see we're all in agreement about Mikasa. I still managed to notice she was abnormally composed and detached before reading the manga, but it's not as obvious in the anime. A single glance at her in the manga and you can tell she's broken.
The lips are not that big a deal. I just don't think it suits her. The eyes are totally wrong though.

That said, I can understand where the objections come from. I think it's mainly a case of how you first experienced the story. If your first impression of the characters came from the manga, you will naturally form certain preconceptions of how they should look and sound in anime, so it's not surprising to experience some dissonance when what you see and hear do not match what you imagined. As someone who first encountered the story via anime, it's the complete opposite. I find more depth and variety in the way Mikasa is presented in the anime. A lot of the credit goes to her seiyuu, Yui Ishikawa, who is apparently a rookie. And, as I mentioned above, the much better art helped too. |

I'm okay with it. She can't have the same dead look after years and years of interaction, right? Besides, I think the look in the manga during downtime is more dedicated and detached rather than traumatized.
Of course, I wouldn't mind her looking this way either: Spoiler for The Stare:
