That's just how this manga is... It doesn't matter whether someone's main character or not, no one's safe (that Jouichiro guy is featured in the anime's OP too... and look what happened to him). That's why GANTZ is so unconventional and unique.

Just when I got to like Kato and start rooting for him, they whacked him off in a dramatic fashion where in the end, he still had the chance of survival. When Kei was beamed back into the room, I was still hoping that Kato would be beamed in after him or behind him (out of view until last moment). But when Gantz's obituary came up, it is confirmed his number was out. Still these events made the development of Kei's character much grittier and real. Coming out of Kato's death, his spirit seems to have infused Kei and brought Kei back to being the person that Kato had idolised. Kato's passing served a purpose. Unfortunately we are left to wonder how his brother will cope (perhaps a future story arc).

Yup... Unlike in other seinen manga where people just get killed off for the heck of it or for shock value (I guess it also applies to an extent to some of the other deaths in this manga), Kato's death made as big an impact as anything else... Kurono matures and becomes much more likeable after that incident (especially after he starts going out with Kojima)... Other manga have done this kind of character "housecleaning" before, but this one actually made the manga MUCH better.

I wholeheartedly agree. Kurono is kicking some major ass in the Dinosaur Round. He's starting to resemble Kato. I think the supporting characters that were introduced are quite interesting, like the old man who teams up with Kurono and the two psychics (not to mention the Americans). Previously Gantz seemed to provide them nothing but goons for partners.

I can feel the phrase "im gonna bust a cap in yo ass" coming out of the americans mouth in the next volume for some reason. But I agree, Kei has got a much better crew around him during the dinosaur round.

I think Jouichiro explained it before... Sometimes GANTZ makes a mistake by teleporting someone who's not dead to the apartment... As a result it creates a copy of the person (the copy is the one GANTZ has control over while the real one stays alive)... Kato and Kurono did die and their real bodies were cut up so they don't have their real selves running around.

Anyway

Kishimoto's real self is still alive and well... Though of course, she doesn't know anything about what her GANTZ copy went through and didn't recognize Kurono
