Wouldn't George Lucas go after them? His pretty famous for protecting his Star Wars franchise.

The catch is, the Chinese copy would probably blow up by itself, without the need for a proton torpedo down an exhaust port.

Nah. The Americans will discover people with innate mental prowress known as Force Sensitives. The Japanese call them Newtypes, and the Koreans call them Psychics.

Then they will wield plasma swords, pilot mecha beyond human ability, and have the ability to cloak.

As far as I know, in Las Vegas you may find the pyramid, the Eiffel tower, and the triumph arch. Nobody seems to have any problem with that.

The thing with a Chinese Death Star Doom Planet is that instead of one, it'll unintentionally have a couple thousand 2 meter wide thermal exhaust ports.

And instead of steel (or whatever material it's supposed to use) it uses cheap plastic with the insides being hollow and filled in with rubbish.

Maybe they are doing it for the sake of recognition?

Due to the fast paced media runs in US, I am guessing that it is due to that they can't get the recognition they want.
