3D Kanojo (Real Girl)

3D Kanojo (Real Girl) manga is getting a TV anime adaptation. Coming for 2018.

Plot:
Quote:
Tsutsui Hikari is an otaku, and he mostly avoids social life. Hikari has only one friend at school, who is also a social misfit, and he is mocked brutally by most of his classmates for being creepy and weird. One day, he ends up having to clean the school pool with Igarashi Iroha, who appears to be pretty much everything he hates in real-life girls. She skips school, has a blunt manner, doesn't have female friends, and seems the sort to be promiscuous. However, she is friendly to Hikari, and even stands up to the people who make fun of him. Hikari's bitterness and trust issues lead him to say pretty harsh things to Iroha, but she never dismisses him as creepy. After a while, it starts to look like Iroha may become his first real-life, 3D girlfriend! Will he be able to handle it?

Episode 1

Not bad actually. The OP song for the show fits with the drama-style storytelling while the animation looks decent for what it is.

Iroha is a really pretty girl and the first episode really made her stand out even compared to some of the other girls. In the meantime, the relationship dynamics are evident between her and the male guy already. Between the lighthearted drama and humor, I think the first episode was alright.

Expecting a lot of kissing

She dropped one heck of a bomb on him at the end of the episode though.

Enjoyed all the Iroha scenes.
Tsutsui made me cringe a bit, what a big persecution complex

This work really perplexes me. I've first heard about 3d kanojo when it was first announced that the director of Heroine Shikaku would be doing another LA adaptation of a manga. So I decided to try the first chapter, and I was honestly confused and wondering about things.

I thought it may be something with the translation, but it's still the same here. Why on earth is a male wish fulfillment story being published in shojo/josei magazine? Everything about the male lead is typical shounen romance lead; otaku, anti-social, gets made fun of, hates riajuus etc. Then he gets to meet and know a beautiful girl who sticks up to him, forcefully tries to get into his life, who seemingly acts like a slut but I can bet dollars to donuts is as a virgin as the male lead. Even the art style has the obviously stunning female lead with the obvious 'main heroine' design, while the male lead is your typical emo edgelord feel. I've seen it a bajillion times now, but it was always with a male demographic in mind. Like how the heck did this even get popular enough with the ladies to get a live action and an anime about it?

Not gonna lie though, I love Iroha. Part of it because she's very similar to another Iroha, and her relationship with the male lead also mirrors that of the other Iroha with her story's MC. So yeah, a part of me thinks of this story as like a 'what if' story, but the other part is attracted because they put token 'main heroine' elements that you normally won't see in a shoujo series. I normally stray from such obvious 'tricks' in male targeted stories, but for some reason it makes Iroha so much more attractive knowing the story is targeted towards female. I can't really explain it lol.

^ I suspect the author just wanted to do something different - it's a good way to stand out from the crowd after all.

I'd say that style of the story is definitely "josei" though (I'd read some of it before and read the ending last night)

yeah. Iroha reminds me of a character from way, way back.

Ayukawa Madoka from Kimagure Orange Road.

Like Ayukawa, Iroha is achingly beautiful, has a reputation as a delinquent but is actually a vulnerable, lonely girl. My bet is that she's probaly *NOT* a Virgin - it is Josei after all, and she was pretty much a doormat to those other guys taking advantage of her. Her attraction to Tsun-kun is probably because he's the first guy to genuinely stick up for her, rather than seek to take advantage of her.

Those tears at the hospital suggest to me (and I haven't read the manga) that its not that she'll be transferring schools in 6 months, but something more dire that will come down the road.

I'm wondering if she has trouble forming connections because her family moves around a lot for a parent's work.

Kind of mixed feelings on the show overall thus far.

I don't really know the spoilers policy here, but I'm fairly sure I can't talk about manga here in detail (and I couldn't find manga topic for this). With that said, I watched the first episode and had very mixed feelings about Iroha's character and I was kinda ready to drop the show, but I eventually decided to do some digging about her true nature first. Without saying much, it ended up with me binge reading the whole manga today in like 6 hours and she's one of my favorite heroines ever now. Eager to see how the adaptation will turn out. I can't see them adapting whole manga in 12 episodes unless they cut side-pairings, which means they'd have to go with semi-original story. If they just follow the manga, it should cover the, what I consider, highest point while stopping before its weakest one.

I hope this post didn't break any rules - I was trying to be as obscure as possible. If anyone has questions about the manga, feel free to DM me since the whole story is still fresh in my mind.

I dunno, it was nice and all that and I hope this goes the hormiya route but just to be safe I'll go the 3 chapter rule.

This was...pleasantly surprising as the ep went along. Initially, I thought I had a good read on the show's tone, especially after seeing what the OP looks like, thinking it was too pure for my tastes but it was surprisingly spicy. Thought, I'm worried it all gets toned down into blandness and this 1st ep was just bait. Oh well, time till well!

I must admit, the fact he spent so much time to make her a custom figurine was endearing

Agreed, but he should have given some props to his friend for helping.

Seems that the story is devoting time to lampshading romance cliches. If that is the direction the story goes, I hope we can skip the annoying childhood friend in favor of Truck-kun.
