Gizmag: RINGS propels satellites without propellants

A 'Reactionless' method of controlling satellites already in the testing phase... I'm hoping this leads to actual reactionless drives down the line.

I especially like one of the quotes there:

Quote:
Calling this "propulsion" isn't completely accurate. It is more of an Electromagnetic Attitude Adjusting teather. EAAT for short.

If you could come up with a technology that used the acronym ONION, you could have EAAT ONION RINGS. You would have no problem getting corporate sponsorship for this technology. Burger king, Jack in the Box, Karls Jr, all competing to make space exploration a reality.
Jason Brown
The invention is brilliant, sadly the same cannot be said about the article.

[warning rant about the way the article is written]

RINGS means, Resonant Inductive Near-field Generation System. There is no P as in propulsion in it. Would be called RINGPS otherwise. I suppose scientists were not just leaving propulsion out of the name, so it would sound more fancy.
In fact RINGS allows for propulsion of single objects relative to each other in a spatially limited cluster. The whole cluster however cannot be propelled with it.

Yet the article uses the word propulsion so often, that you could think its magic. And on top of that, the article is even wrong, claiming there is no propellent. Really.... guys really? ... if cluster object A uses a force on cluster object B to move cluster object A what does that make cluster object B? Yeah B is a propellant for A and vice versa. That satellites can act as propellants is the whole story.

[/warning rant about the way the article is written]

Isn't that quote from the comments section, not the article itself?

The word "propellant" is synonymous with "combustible fuel" in rocketry, which is true that this system makes no use of.

And why must it be "combustible fuel"? They could call it solid/liquid/gas propellant then. But if there is no word left to describe a physical object that is meant to be used to propell another object... whats the point of having the word in english? (I must admit I am not too familiar with the scope of technical terms in english). I mean whats a bag of stones called - when you use the stones (as in throwing them away) to move into the opposit direction of where they were thrown in space?

Random access memories: My time at a singularity conference:

Now this is surprising. I wonder how close we really are in conjuring up the necessary tech for this.

Exclusive Photo: Large Flying Wing Drone Spotted At Plant 42:

"This picture was taken from a pilot passing through Palmdale about a 16
months ago. What appears is a large flying wing type unmanned aircraft
with a dorsal intake. The wingspan appears to be right around seventy
feet. The aircraft appears here in the smaller of two wide and low slung
aircraft shelters, built around 2010, located by the engine test cells,
just north of the Northrop Grumman installation at Plant 42.

Although the aircraft bears a resemblance to the now famous RQ-170
Sentinel, its dimensions are quite larger. Although it is widely reported
that the RQ-170, as we know it at least, has a wingspan of about 75 feet,
the reality is that it is actually much smaller. Somewhere between 38 and
50 feet is much more accurate. There have been growing rumors of a larger
”Super Sentinel,” one that may even pack a decent attack capability, as
well as upgraded stealth features, communications, and survivability
features, not to mention greater persistence. Although this is still rumor
supported by scant facts at this point, this aircraft would certainly fit
that bill."

Maybe the smallest ones. They're only 3m tall.

Here we have, people, possible future immortality of the consciousness. This is going to fight so many ethical barriers, it's ridiculous.

"Proponents of the singularity say that the changes would be such a significant tipping point in the way our world operates that we have no way of predicting what will come after."

I'm not sure that I would like what would come after.

‘First Practical’ Jetpack Attracts Security, Military Interest:

"Border patrols, first responders and bungee jumpers looking for a new thrill are all potential
users of what developer Martin Aircraft says will be the first practical Jetpack when deliveries
begin in 2014. The military is also interested, for use on manned or unmanned missions ranging
from radio relay to personnel insertion and cargo resupply."

I wouldn't compare these to Jetman's. His wingpack is built for high-speed flight, but has no self take-off abilities whatsoever, so when it lands it lands for good, and has to be taken up into the air by another craft. These meanwhile has VTOL capability, which makes them more useful for everyday tasks
