This welcome announcement comes in the wake of the sentencing of Mayu Tomita's attacker a couple of days ago ... 81produce asks fans to stop harassing voice actors.
Edit to add, for a different angle from which to approach this thread’s topic, I’m also linking to a comment I posted about the work done, with and by Non [Rena Nounen], to create the dialect for Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni (In a Corner of this World)’s protagonist. On March 18, 2017, Non received the Special Prize at the eleventh annual Seiyū Awards. Last edited by Verso Sciolto; 2017-03-18 at 07:24. Reason: Special Prize Seiyū Awards |

The Seiyuu Award is currently trending in Japan right now. The specific topic of whether the award should go to people who are not seiyuu by profession is currently the biggest point of discussion.

Is this just because she starred in your name? I know that the film has been earning awards, but she has a very short resume to be named best actress for the year.
I didn't recognize any of the top awardees. Looks like they all voice films rather than television shows. Is this another indication of the lower status assigned to TV series by the industry?

Also when it comes to Best/Supporting Actor/Actress, are those awards based on a specific performance, or for their work throughout the year?

Kamishiraishi's short resume mostly includes appearances in live-action films; for instance, she portrayed Oe Kanade in the live-action Chihayafuru adaptation. Kamiki's resume has about equal numbers of live-action and animated roles. It's at least reasonable to wonder if they would have received the top awards if they had not appeared in the most financially successful Japanese animated film in many years.

Probably non-professional seiyuu.
I really never expected the Seiyuu Awards to give the Best Actress award to a relative unknown/amateur. I'm sure the debate about whether or not to give the biggest awards to non-professional seiyuu will rage on for quite a while. Nonetheless, it's the biggest shock that has happened in the worldwide entertainment industry witihin this decade since the #OscarsSoWhite debacle a year ago. |

The main concern is the recognition of seiyuu-by-profession now that a live action actor can "outdo" them in that aspect. If another Kimi no Na Wa appears with a non-seiyuu cast, then what point is it to host the Seiyuu Awards?

If they won these awards based on a specific role (Like Best Actor/Actress for the Oscars), I'm not seeing the problem. This would be like someone complaining that a newbie won an Oscar for Best Actor/Actress while up again veterans. If the people who voted thought they were just that good then so be it. If, however, the awards are given out based on body of work for the whole year then yes, I can see how that might be a problem.

If I had to pick favorite Japanese voice actors are:
*Soichiro Hoshi for his role as Kazuma from Scryed and Sanada Yukimura from Sengoku Basara. The guy yells his lungs a lot XD *Jun Fukuyama, while better known from his role as Lelouch from Code Geass, I also liked how his performance changed through Kimihiro Watanuki as his character starts from irritating to incredibly quiet. |
