Wow, I thought Kujira looked similar to Medaka, but I didn't expect to her to actually be their sibling, and her ideals are definitely different .
Wonder how things will go now that Medaka met her again.

Um... how are they different? They're the same. Remember a few episodes ago when Maguro offered to train Medaka and Zenkichi? He gave them a choice between no-effort sleep improvement and hellish course with a risk of death. No indication was made that the risky one would lead to better results. Yet Medaka and her disciple chose to risk their lives for absolutely no reason. Medaka also believes that great things come from enduring hell. Naze isn't very different from her at all.
Come to think of it, that's also Medaka's entire reasoning for wanting to stop the Flask Plan. The idea of a Genius Drink is offensive to her ideology. Last edited by Clarste; 2012-11-26 at 12:52. |

It's true that both Medaka and Kujira think that you require a lot of effort to achieve greatness. However Kujira also thinks that to achieve great things you must be miserable and suffer a lot. She was blessed with talents, looks and wealth but rejected everything for her misplaced beliefs.

Medaka meets her long lost sister Naze.
Now that was not a typical family reunion. Naze is totally a psycho and beyond saving. Medaka's goodness was brutally used by Naze. She shouldn't have been so trustful. Those reinforcements with Unzen were kinda refreshing and very much needed.

This episode sort of went from awesome, to what? Back to awesome again.
One second Medaka and everyone else seem to be doing ok, the next second she's been kidnapped and her brother is losing his abnormality. I was like....what? Thankfully their allies showed up and that brought the awesomeness back up, and the ending had me hyped.

For example, one of the most critical lines was: "Why was I born." That's actually the central question of a Sue. What purpose does a Sue serve? Given the unrelenting hostility towards the concept of Mary Sue, if a Mary Sue was genre aware enough to realize she was a Sue, what happens then? Naze offers one scenario, Medaka Offers another. That's what I mean when I say that Naze and Medaka start with the same conditions (a wealthy family, a live in paradise, perfection to the point that they are both Mary Sues, and sufficient awareness to realize they are Mary Sue's) The central question from that realization then would be : does life have meaning when life has no challenges? Why do I (a Mary Sue) exist for, besides merely existing to be "awesome", which isn't really much of an existence to begin with, when you look at it? Naze's answer to that is : if Indeed, I am Happy (a Sue), I am better off dead. Therefore, I shall suffer (Anti-Sue), and in suffering, achieve purpose. Medaka's stance: Benevolence is my purpose in life. Therefore, I shall be as Benevolent as possible, as a purpose and challenge I set for myself. Whether I am intrinsically Benevolent (and that's the question the anime has made clear than Naze wants to know the answer too) is irrelevant from my standpoint. This is actually what Unzen was questioning - the principle behind Medaka's purpose. Of course, Unzen misdiagnoses the true reason why Medaka chooses the path of Benevolence in the first place. Treat everything from the Unzen arc seriously, and I think Anime Only viewers should be able to guess the answer. There's enough hints in the anime alone. In actuality, that's why alot of manga readers were angry by Gainax blind adaptation of the first arc. It makes it much more difficult to appreciate everything from the Unzen arc onwards. Too much time (three quarters of a cour) was spent presenting a case (Medaka, the benevolent perfect super-human), that most readers didn't proceed to ask : why Medaka is the way she is to begin with? Unzen asked part of that question, but I suspect it sailed past most anime viewers quite understandably, because let's face it, after seeing Nine Episodes of Medaka-sue, it's quite hard to treat Medaka Box seriously enough to acknowledge that Medaka Box doesn't just end with the antics of a Sue (and Medaka is a very deliberate Sue, mind you). Viewers have been too condition to see Medaka Box as being too shallow that by the time Medaka Box goes deeper, most Anime-only viewers would quite understandably dismiss it as a temporary abberation, or an equally shallow attempt to sound deep. Sadly, I think Medaka Box scared away most viewers who would have appreciated the Flask Plan arc. (Especially Post-Naze). Quote:
I think it's a case of subverted expectations in your case. Which is what Medaka Box does, all the time, after the Unzen Arc begins onwards. (Anime wise, this is the last three episodes of Medaka Box's first season). Just remember, Medaka Box is a Troll-fic Meta Shounen Manga written by Nisio. |

But, nothing wrong with a big brawl party. On top of that, Miss Swimmer gets some action. Oh, how I wanna hold her breath for her.
