But China recently had a spike in cases during late December/early January.

If you check the credits of most anime shows nowadays, you'll find that most of them do at least some level of outsourcing to China, Korea, Vietnam, and other parts of Asia.

I thought it would be delayed to Spring or Summer so this is good news.

My guess, they are pulling the same thing J.C.Staff did with Railgun S3. I.e. they will take short brakes for now to at least finish some story arc and delay it to the next season once they are out of timeslots.

It's back! With plenty of 2B ass!

They did a really good job with that story. I wish they hadn't cut out the roller coaster part but it's a minor complaint. Everyone including game players (especially them, I'd say) will be surprised by the ending. That was brutal.

And it's back. Dang, the show is visually striking, if nothing else. I probably would understand way more what is going if I'd played the games. It's still pretty interesting nonetheless.

The anime actually tells a lot more than the game did at this point, since we get both 2B and 9S's perspectives. In the game you first play as 2B and you see none of the enemy machine flashbacks.

The story is supposed to be full of mysteries.

You're right. That was absolutely brutal! I don't remember 9S being that stone cold in the game

Ok I need to admit that I haven't really watched since episode 2. How much does the show stick to the original beyond this episode 2?

So far, pretty close.
But this is Yokitaro, he can throw us out of window anytime when we make easy assumptions.

So far (and mind that I actually haven't finished the game yet), pretty close.

One major difference is:
Spoiler for game comparison:

Interesting that they had 9S's body lifeless during the hacking session while 2B had to protect it.

They're both from the Pearl Harbor mission.

Obviously, Lily being here brings into question what happened to Anemone and what could have happened differently, but for now she serves the same purpose as Anemone did. The manga you're talking about covers the events the same way as the original stage play did.

episode 4:

glad this anime is back.

and this is the creepiest episode so far. That weird play using android bodies as decorations?

2B seems to be more kind than 9S. She hesitated to kill that "mother and daughter", maybe because those machines are not a threat to her?

The hacking went probably way too far. The robot basically tried to sexually assault 9S however it works. I think Yoko Taro only went this far with the Nier novel about the older brother.

This episode sure gave 2B and especially 9S a lot to think about. A whole village of peaceful machines cut off from the network.

Was really surprised with the way they introduced Emil here. He's the machine's object of worship in the anime, and for some reason 9S was able to hack into him and we saw all the main characters of Nier Replicant. I'm starting to think the anime will delve into Replicant a lot more than the game did.

Aside from that, no major deviations.

You technically were allowed to hack Emil in both fights as well, but it took so long that you were likely to get hit in the process, so it wasn't worth it.

Honestly, Nines is way more of a fanatic for the mission credo than 2B, despite his otherwise easygoing personality.
