How many Americans take college-level poly-sci classes?

I think his point is apt.

Lets see.... as of 2005, 30% of all Americans of any age had college degrees (USA Today). 35% more have at least some college. So out of 300 million folks, 195 million of them have at least a year or two of college.

I think my point is still apt as well --- which is it's not like the two or three paragraphs it takes to properly describe Communism and Marxism has been suppressed: people simply don't pay attention.

To add to Vexx's point, people simply don't care to find out more before opening their mouths.

Well, if so many people have been taught Marxism so straightforwardly and objectively in the US, I really must worry about the amount of ADD people out there. Perhaps they really should be getting more Ritalin.

Sorry, but I definitely can't believe it's taught so straightforwardly. Not after all the sorts of things I hear time and time again about communism, even among supposedly learned people (the Slashdot crowd, etc). Perhaps the actual (nonexistent) relationship between Marx and the Soviet Union is not taught correctly?

Basically, people have no flaming idea that Marx only had ideas. Those who put it into action (Lenin, Mao, Ho....) borrowed his name, but I'm damn sure that what they did was not what the Bearded One had in mind.

Anyway, most "capitalist" societies practise some degree of socialism now.

But poly-science is rarely a required course in colleges. American higher education emphasizes choice; students are encouraged to pursue their majors, and though they typically take one or two breadth courses on American culture and/or civics, this does not include reading Marx. It is reasonable, then, to assert that most Americans have never come into contact with Marx's writings, much less studied them in-depth. Their opinions of Communism are shaped by the media and cursory paragraphs in history books, like it or not.

Interesting.. .it *used* to be standard fair in any government/civics/polysci course to get a reading list of more than a dozen books including such items as The Federalist Papers, some of Jefferson's writings, the writings of Karl Marx, Rousseau, Macchiavelli, and most of the other great government system philosophers.

What do they teach now? Barney's Purple Politics? I'm not being snide to you --- just that if what you say holds true it just bolsters my opinion of why I see more than I like of uninformed opinions in forums, blogs, and in conversation. However, its not like the information is suppressed. I'm just not very impressed with people who don't check up on what they spout or show enough curiosity to explore what they don't know.
(or admit when they do need to look something up).

It varies with the university. In Berkeley, for example, the American Cultures requirement can be satisfied with African American Studies, Women Studies, or other such types of courses.

Which happens to be that Communism is the form of all evil, the bearer of malice, and the epitome of all things bad.
