I also enjoy the fact that they're committed to their overall story arc such that they're totally okay with very subtle episodes like episode 5 (where virtually all the tension is mental until the last few seconds).

Yeah, the last fight was the action I loved to see in Madhouse's anime when Yoshiaki Kawajiri was making Ninja Scroll or Cyber Cit, and the reason I still enjoy man-to-man fights.

Late comming on. Man, I'm I glad I gave this a spin! It's been a long time scince i've seen a mature show like this. I hate metal but LOVE Systematic People (well at least it in conjunction with the OP sequence anyways).
And Romi Park is the queen of seiyuu, I didn't even recongize her by ear in here. But she sounds so attractive, total one eighty from her usual shonen roles. |

This show is like an incantation. The pacing, emotions (and lack of them), and fighting are all just beautifully done. It may seem a stretch, but the way they combine visual/musical rhythms in this show reminds me of ef.
Spoiler for ep6:

Ep7 is another winner. I really think Miyano Mamoru is doing a wonderful job. And I wondered where I had heard the beautiful tones of Saniwa (the old woman) before. She is played by Fujita Toshiko, who was Tsukikage (Maya's teacher) in Glass Mask 2005.
Spoiler for ep7:
