Heroes with low self-esteem
I recently asked about prideful characters (and got a lot to go through); I was wondering if there are any good heroes with seriously low self-esteem. Heroes who are prone to thinking themselves unworthy or insufficient for the task, or who easily and quickly defer to others, or otherwise demonstrate a serious lack of confidence or will to stand up for themselves. Naturally, since they're heroes, there's no problem with them growing out of it, just as long as it's not immediate.

If you're not specific about the story's genre,
Yuri on Ice is very much a story about a young man with low self-esteem issues. (sports, BL) Tsurune also qualifies, I think. (high school sports)

Haruhiro from Grimgar of fantasy and ash is the prime example. Issei in High School DXD but not as prominent, especially when he have to deal with girls. Actually a lot of harem main characters have at least partially this trait when they are not overpowered.

About anything besides bishounen or shounen-ai/yaoi type stuff; sorry. Just about anything else is fine. And to Kurohane, "anything else" does include card games. I haven't watched as much as that but I've enjoyed those that I have watched.

Persona 4's characters tend to be involved with some psychological issues like Chie feeling she is under the shadow of Yukiko, Kanji being afraid of not being accepted for his taste on stuff and even the main character who is insecure about becoming friendless when the Investigation Team fails. I wouldn't recommend Golden though as it felt like fanservice.
