What is so bad about him? He's because is black? or more like the ultimate black stereotype? black in New York, gangster, murderer, the clown of the group, big lips, afro and depending of the dub jamaican accent?

I hope they didn't take away anything as his aesthetics ironically go well with his Over Soul and after everything Takei fought to keep the work as he wanted it I hope he hasn't backed in this one.

I think make his lips less pronounced, otherwise his design is pretty alright.

For a certain arc's theme song, I wonder if they'll use this song.

As an African Canadian I have zero problems with chocolove's back story in fact it shouldn't be ignored and changing it would actually be racist, the fact is
Spoiler for shaman king:
so this one of the few examples were I'm happy japan is doing whatever they want.

Differing opinion from another black person. I haven't seen the previous version of this show so will reserve judgement on rather or not his portrayal is racist, but I can see how it could potentially be problematic.

Yes, black men in gangs happens, but gangs happen in all races. I can personally count on one hand the number of my family members who were part of a gang, I'd need several dozen hands to count the number of them who were not. But, I realize everyone's experience is different.

However, is Chocolove the sole representation of our race, because even still were more then just gangs and violence. What was the authors reason for making him a former gang member? We may never know, unless the show hints at it, but if he just wanted to show a character struggling to come up in the world, you can do that without making him a gang member.

The problem is that making a black character, especially a black man a gang member or a former gang member has become an overused stereotype, especially in western media. And, I imagine you may know, that for decades we've fought against such stereotypes, and for better representation, and continue to do so.

Western countries and the US especially export a lot of it's media around the world, and in some instances how they've portrayed us may be the only exposure some people have to black Westerners, especially black Americans of which I am one. And, Japan is not exactly known for it's racial diversity. As such, many Japanese people would have little first hand knowledge of black life, and would mostly rely on what they see imported to them, which is more often then not white people's notions about black life.

Yedoye, from the youtube channel Get in the Robot, actually has a very interesting video about this, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AEQJZ_BzJk&t=1s.

Anyway, I said all that to say, no I don't believe that changing his character would itself be racist, especially if Chocolove's characterization is in fact problematic. For my part I'll just have to wait and see.

I someone who has read the manga I'll try to keep it spoiler free as possible the whole thing about Chocolove's character is his dream is to be a comedian he wish to bring laughter not violence you have to understand he came from a very depressing childhood after a certain event happened the character you see in the anime wasn't the character you see in his flash back were he killed a lot of people it wasn't until he meet a certain someone where he learned " its okay to smile" changing the gang aspect changes the character and his goal and whatever back story we would get wouldn't be as powerful as what the manga did ( anyone who read the manga knows what I'm talking about) hence why I'm okay with his backstory, I do think his design needs some work but there isn't anything really wrong with the back story.

Wow, didn't see this coming.

This anime was a childhood classic for me. Happy that it gets the FMAB treatment.

I'm concerned about the reboot's style. The manga sometimes did stuff way too comical during serious situations like Manta defeating bikers. Mizushima tried balancing the comedy and drama sometimes with this case using Ryu to aid Manta.

Same with Yoh's characterization sometimes and his relationship with Hao. In the anime Hao completely shocked Yoh when revealing the truth while in the manga Yoh already knew from the beginning.

There is also almost half about Lyserg and Horohoro too.
