Questions on dvd burner

I have a question I just purchased this drive from newegg:
Brand LG
Type DVD Burner
Model GSA-H54NK
Performance
DVD-ROM Access Time 140ms
CD-ROM Access Time 120ms
Cache 2MB
WRITE Speed
DVD+R 18X
DVD+RW 8X
DVD-R 18X
DVD-RW 6X
CD-R 48X
CD-RW 32X
DVD+R DL 10X
DVD-R DL 10X
DVD-RAM 12X
READ Speed
DVD-ROM 16X
CD-ROM 48X
Physical Spec
Form Factor 5"
Panel Color Black
Configuration
Load Type Tray
Interface E-IDE/ATAPI

I was wondering if this drive is compatible with most blank dvd media out there. I'm currently using Sony DVD-R 1-16x.

yes, if the disc is made only to burn at 16X speed then the burner will burn at 16X speed, but if you have a 18X disc it will burn at 18X. You can pretty much burn everything expect Blu-ray and HD DVDs

Uh LG... i have a LOT of bad experience with LG optical drive...
- It won't open if there's no cd inside unless you hit em hard...
- It BREAKS my precious School Rumble Nigakki disc...

Anyway... don't worry about disc compatibility too much... All you need a blank disc with any speed up to your burner speed. Mine (48X CD-R) also can burn a 52X blank CD-R, offcourse at 48X...

Nowadays your don't need to worry about DVD writer drives. They are cheap and all have almost the same specs anyway.

Tee hee quoted for the truth, unless it takes you god knows how many attempts to line up the drive with the case bevel. I fear the day I have to change the writer in my server box

You shouldn't have to sweat these details. DVD writers are hitting their limits in development, and nowadays most drives can write on practically anything.

But get some other brand, as others have suggested. Samsung, Lite-On, Sony, etc.
