I know, but most of the laws put in place seem to be targeted towards youth violence. I've seen some of the 16-25yo's around here. Underage drinking, public nuisance, shouting, ganging up, swearing. A van full of young tradies went past and they were giving me the finger because I was in school uniform. >.< They're the ones that bring the whole system down. If they can't say "I'm a bit tipsy, maybe I won't drive" instead of "I know I'm tipsy, but it's my car and ain't no Mother****** gonna touch my car" then these things wouldn't happen:

Survivor 'saw fear in brother's eyes'

Last month, a probationary licenced driver had a bit too much to drink, and crashed his car into a tree, killing 5 people.

Driver, 15, critical. Passenger dead

Last night, someone who shouldn't even have been driving crashed a car, and killed his best mate.

See what I mean? These people have no idea what they're doing. This is why the state bumped up the practice minimum and extended the probationary period.

Common Sense and Responsibility or lack there of

Thank you Xellos THANK YOU!! You hit the bullseye and win the qupie doll! For a long time one of my pet peves has been the LACK of common sense and/or resposibility, especially by ADULTS! Granted I am 33 but there are people out there my age who do some of the most stupidest, ignorant things and then show up on the 5 o'clock(evening)news whineing about how they just didn't know or realize that if they did "A" that "B" would happen! Excuse me but when did consciense thought stop working, let alone common sense.
You see it everyday; People talking on their cells while driving, cleaning a gun they thought was unloaded,or changeing a light bulb while the switch is still on! Now you may say "Hey I've done that and nothing bad happened." And it may never happen BUT what if it does? Don't get me wrong Lord knows I've done some really bone headed things in my life and I'm not trying to preach to you guys either. Matter of fact I'm rather proud to be a part of such a bunch of "kids" who ARE THINKING outside the box! I feel that the world might be a better place with you guys manning the helm!
Question everything you are taught, think "is this news caster, politician, etc. really giving me the whole story?" and please don't be afraid to ask those hard questions to your folks, mentors,us older types,or someone you really trust! Remember to never stop learning or asking and we are all here for a reason: To HELP one another!
I would really like to know why back stabbing behind-the-back behavior is so reinforced on popular TV like survivor and big brother? Think about it their actually enforceing the belief that screwing one another over is a GOOD thing!

A small-scale project for its people and geographic neighbors might work better.

This also reminds me of Microsoft's (or any other company's) plan to diversify its operations into other areas away from its core strength. Done well, that means Google is less dependent on searches and advertising; done badly, someone comes and eats Google's lunch. The second is more likely.

Google's founders were also planning to sell a few billion dollars' worth of held stock, if I remember right, so its future direction and leaders might change to be more corporate than entrepreneurial. This will happen anyway, but being a telecom-like company isn't Google's strong area, IMHO.

Greek civil servants strike over austerity measures
Quote:
ATHENS — Striking civil servants brought public services to a halt across Greece on Wednesday, in a largely peaceful one-day protest against the tough austerity measures officials have said are necessary to stave off a mounting financial crisis.
The last I heard, the German government declined to help, but it was a day or so ago. Has that changed?
Spoiler for BBC debate among Stiglitz, Casajuana and Hendry:
Hugh Hendry's biting remarks are... No comment, but the other debaters' points are very PC and PR, which I find hard to believe these days. Why the Spanish ambassador, though? Spain is on the short list of upcoming problem countries, but this is about Greece...

It comes with journalistic writing I suppose; too many if's and but's cut down on clarity and they can't afford that, even when the actual subject demands that there be no clarity yet.

Climate-change chief won't apologise
Quote:
London (Feb 3): The embattled chief of the UN's climate change body has hit out at his critics and refused to resign or apologise for a damaging mistake in a landmark 2007 report on global warming.

In an exclusive interview with the Guardian, Dr Rajendra Pachauri, chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, said it would be hypocritical to apologise for the false claim that Himalayan glaciers could melt away by 2035, because he was not personally responsible for that part of the report. "You can't expect me to be personally responsible for every word in a 3,000 page report," he said.

He has come under fire for the error, with even Mr John Sauven, director of Greenpeace UK, a former ally, calling on him to step down. The IPCC has issued a statement expressing regret for the mistake, but Dr Pachauri said a personal apology would be a "populist" step.

"I don't do too many populist things, that’s why I'm so unpopular with a certain section of society," he said, in an apparent reference to climate-change sceptics.

Mea culpa.

Just to clarify, though, from what I can remember, the story was picked up from the wires — it wasn't entirely our fault that it was written that way. And, besides, we've got Digital Life deputy editor Oo Gin Lee relishing his violent games, very publicly, on a regular basis. So... it kind of evens out, right?

It was under Today, published last year somewhere in June. I remember it being labelled "from Asashi Shimbun". Seriously, nobody actually read through the article or even did a 5-minute google for GameFAQs for that game?

Actually, I am glad today's MYB made an effort to restructure the coke-report to a better informed article. Here is the scan from today's Straits Times publication :

The red meat (found in quite a number of the local meals) and smoking (duty*cough*unpaid*cough*next*cough*door) are great examples to throw in and provide a better POV for the reader. More informative than that small report from that site eh?

But I guess in our fast-paced society and that economy problem, we can't live without fast news laden with "weasel" words rather than facts. Thank goodness I gave up that dream of being a journalist/reporter long time ago, reading is always easier than writing for a lazy person like me.

OT : And yeah, I do enjoy reading DL. Even though most game reviews are outdated by a couple of weeks, but always interesting. I can't wait to see if Mr Oo will get a coffee session with the SPH board people for writing up about AVP3 or Dante's Inferno.

Storm leaves damage trail

Making breaking news in Victoria (and headlines in tomorrow's papers) is news of a freak storm that hit Melbourne hours ago, dropping an unprecedented amount of water and leaving damage in it's wake. Just to tell you how bad it was (I was outside when it hit), approximately 10 minutes before it started pouring I saw a dark blot of cloud looming in the North west, while the other side was just patchy cloud. I walked into a library to grab a book, came out and it was spitting. Went into an Aldi store, got some chips, came out 5 minutes later and it was pouring with rain, and loud thunderclaps. As I write, it's still pouring cats and dogs out there.

The storm itself has flooded Melbourne, and severed train services. Glad I got a lift home.

Surprised this isn't in the news more considering the earthquake in Haiti:

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/11/us/11chicago.html 3.8 magnitude

For a bit of history:

Forgot to add this one since it's directly related to the main story:

Not really surprising, everyday there are small scale earthquake all over the world, so many that people simply don't really bother when they are happening in very active areas (it will get mentioned in the news maybe, but that's it, and anyway they already have adapted infrastructure or societies), and even in intraplate seismic areas, catastophic events have such low frequency that only in regional news will they speak of the past big one (and risk analysis tells us that implementing seismic proof infrastructure is not worth it).

For example when here we got small scale seism in the Alps, we'll be the only ones to discuss about the risks of dam rupture, or similarly, when a small scale earthquake occur in the Rhine Graben, only in our area will we reminisce the 1356 Basel earthquake, so will we be the only ones to angst over what it could do to the very concentrated chemical industry we have there, or to the neighboring french Fessenheim nuclear power plant, all of those which are by the Rhine river, which irrigates the very hearth of dynamic and densely populated Western Europe.

@JMvS - It's true that the entire world has minor earthquakes every year, I just felt it was notable to point out the one in the Chicago area because scientists believe that the fault near New Madrid is shutting down and the one in Wabash Valley may be becoming more active as the pressure in the plates shifts. The entire region is densely populated, way more than it was back in the 1800's, but there are very few educational materials about what to do when an earthquake hits.

Since so many people associate earthquakes with California there's not as much of a focus on the Midwest region. However an earthquake in the Midwest of significant magnitude could be crippling for the country, possibly devastating. In the last decade, there's been three noticeable earthquakes in the region, including a 5.2 back in 2008. I doubt we should be in a mad rush to prepare the region for "the big one", but I do support more awareness and scientific investigation of the region considering how poorly prepared we were for something like Katrina, which we knew in advance would be hitting the Gulf Coast.

On a related note, I wish this got more press too:

That ruling was a load of crap... there's something seriously broken when *drawings* and *cartoon characters* are being "protected". Modern witchburning at work.

I'll be the first one to say he had sketchy tastes... but no one was harmed by the things he collected or by him.

Better hide your XKCD stick-figures.... they *might* be under-age and therefore child porn of child stick-figures. Sheesh.

Basically, Handley was looking at ruination at the hands of a zealot and plea-bargained. The rest of society will suffer for that legal precedent.

Geez, we have more earthquakes than that in Sicily. I think people tend to associate earthquakes with California because it had some of the biggest earthquakes throughout history, even if they're infrequent. I think that's where the misconception comes from.

The problem with these "loli" manga is that the characters are not underage even if they look like they are. Lucky Star's a good example of that, although it's not exactly XXX rated.

No, the problem is that they don't exist. No real person has been harmed by the making or writing of these manga. The guy's going to jail for what is basically a thought crime.
