Standard lecture: MP4 is a container, not a codec. It can contain anything from ultra-low-quality videos for palmtop computers or the PSP, up to 1920x1080 H.264 HDTV encodes that requires a monster CPU to decode in realtime.
That being said: none of the above. I agree with AMZ, h.264 in MKV.

Use mkv only if you need it (softsub using ASS for instance) don't if it's just because you feel too lazy to use MP4BOX. |

Not that I agree with their preference, knowing there will be more people with same preference as TheFluff or AMZ, this vote is not well constructed at all.
We(Froth-Bite) release English hardsub of h.264/MP4 that are not PSP compatible. When it comes to release format, the choice is bigger than ever now. First, we have container. There, we have OGM (^^; ), MKV, AVI, WMV/ASF, RMVB, MP4, etc. On top of that, we have actual codec, both in video and audio. XviD/DivX/ASP, AVC, and some other minor players... they're all valid choice. MP3, Vorbis, AAC, AC3... they are also valid choice for audio. If we want to make the releases compatible to portable players, the choices are limited greatly. But as of late, we're seeing more variety of players with different playback restrictions. Trying to generate "generic" portable-player-compatible release won't be easy to do, and won't give the best quality that's possible. So..... It's best if the questions were asked in several different stages. 1. PC-centric release/portable device compatibility 2. container 3. video codec 4. audio codec Or make it non-poll, and open up the discussion to all possible combinations... and let the format debate/war go on as it does today. |

What is the advantage of h264? I have a 2.4 GHz on my laptop and I still have to shut down all other processes just to get the video to playback smoothly. If I were to go with a prefference I would have to use the DivX codec. The files are small, the quality is very good, and they can be played without problems on even somewhat slower computers.
I personlly can't stand h264. |

When we even have an h.264 successful playback reports on 733MHz Windows PC, complaints coming from someone with 2.4GHz sounds very weak. For h.264 specific opinions, that thread should be more appropriate.
I seriously doubt it's h.264 encodes' fault. It must be the fault of the splitter/decoder/player setting/conflict. |

I believe that I am using the Mplayer.(I am not home right now, but this is what I remember) My laptop only has 256MB of memory so this is part of the problem. That said, I have never had a problem running similar sized files that use Divx and I don't see any quality difference.

h264+ASS softsubs+MKV results in something like a minimum of 1.8 gHz required for optimal playback. I can't get behind that kind of hardware demand. On the other hand, I've been liking the h264 hardsub+MP4 work that's been coming out of several different groups. You get the better compression without severely ramping up the processor demands. What do you lose? Softsubs - big loss.
