Exclamation RMVB, MP4 or WMV?

Chinese fansub groups are already using RMVB and MP4 formats. If an English fansub group is going to use one of these formats, which one would you prefer? Just curious. Thanks for voting.

MP4 doesn't mean PSP Format.

Well, MP4 is most associated with PSP, and that's how most Chinese group describe their MP4 files.

If for you MP4=h264, then there are more and more fansubs using it outside china too.

Don't expect High Quality on a PSP for MP4 file.

I should try dl the MP4 file and see how bad the quality is then. To me, RMVB (100mb) quality is acceptable. It's comparable to sub 200mb AVI quality.

Standard lecture: MP4 is a container, not a codec. It can contain anything from ultra-low-quality videos for palmtop computers or the PSP, up to 1920x1080 H.264 HDTV encodes that requires a monster CPU to decode in realtime.

That being said: none of the above. I agree with AMZ, h.264 in MKV.

If you'r aiming for PC compatibility only, do that, but if you want your h264 file to be portable with new hardware H264 reader repesct the standard : MP4.
Use mkv only if you need it (softsub using ASS for instance) don't if it's just because you feel too lazy to use MP4BOX.

Not that I agree with their preference, knowing there will be more people with same preference as TheFluff or AMZ, this vote is not well constructed at all.

We(Froth-Bite) release English hardsub of h.264/MP4 that are not PSP compatible. When it comes to release format, the choice is bigger than ever now.

First, we have container. There, we have OGM (^^; ), MKV, AVI, WMV/ASF, RMVB, MP4, etc.

On top of that, we have actual codec, both in video and audio. XviD/DivX/ASP, AVC, and some other minor players... they're all valid choice. MP3, Vorbis, AAC, AC3... they are also valid choice for audio.

If we want to make the releases compatible to portable players, the choices are limited greatly. But as of late, we're seeing more variety of players with different playback restrictions. Trying to generate "generic" portable-player-compatible release won't be easy to do, and won't give the best quality that's possible.

So..... It's best if the questions were asked in several different stages.
1. PC-centric release/portable device compatibility
2. container
3. video codec
4. audio codec

Or make it non-poll, and open up the discussion to all possible combinations... and let the format debate/war go on as it does today.

it's not a given that U will be able to play back an x264 encoded video in mp4 container on any future hardware h264 reader, or bluray/hdvd players.

WMV&RMVB are prone to give problems on linux, I'd stick with mkv(h264+ogg).

What is the advantage of h264? I have a 2.4 GHz on my laptop and I still have to shut down all other processes just to get the video to playback smoothly. If I were to go with a prefference I would have to use the DivX codec. The files are small, the quality is very good, and they can be played without problems on even somewhat slower computers.

I personlly can't stand h264.

The compression ratio is greater. You get a smaller file for the same quality, or greater quality for the same size. That's basically what it amounts to. Which player are you using? I can play back h264 videos on a 2.0 Ghz PC without serious problems, so I have to wonder if you are using the best player for the job. Mind you, that PC has lots of RAM.

Well, most fansubbers seem to like it, so in a years time, don't expect much in the way of a choice. You have to understand, they do it primarily because they want to. Your preferences are not really relevant.

When we even have an h.264 successful playback reports on 733MHz Windows PC, complaints coming from someone with 2.4GHz sounds very weak. For h.264 specific opinions, that thread should be more appropriate.

I seriously doubt it's h.264 encodes' fault. It must be the fault of the splitter/decoder/player setting/conflict.

I believe that I am using the Mplayer.(I am not home right now, but this is what I remember) My laptop only has 256MB of memory so this is part of the problem. That said, I have never had a problem running similar sized files that use Divx and I don't see any quality difference.

Then something is wrong, unless you're playing hi-res stuff (>1024x576 or so). Make a post in the playback help forum and we'll fix it. (My ancient 1.4 GHz Celeron laptop with 512 MB RAM plays H.264 just fine with all kinds of shiat running in the background).

Too bad most encoders can, then :/

I'm getting a bit tired of this... every time someone says "Hey, MKV is nice", people instantly go "zOMG HARDWARE COMPATIBILITY, you should use MP4!!!!1111one!!11". Realize this: We currently have NO IDEA about what the H.264-compatible DVD players will look like or what exact features they will have. There has been talk about players that will be MKV-capable. However neither alternative exists right now, and there's far from any guarantees that the current MP4 releases will work in all hardware players.

h264+ASS softsubs+MKV results in something like a minimum of 1.8 gHz required for optimal playback. I can't get behind that kind of hardware demand. On the other hand, I've been liking the h264 hardsub+MP4 work that's been coming out of several different groups. You get the better compression without severely ramping up the processor demands. What do you lose? Softsubs - big loss.
