Yeah, I was thinking perhaps I misunderstood what exactly the fox was feeling for Yuuichi. Your explanation makes a lot of sense -- Makoto's character has a lack of basic common sense and would indeed just interpret marriage to mean exactly what the manga spells it out to be, which is like you said to be together forever -- and I guess that is something I failed to pick up on. When I think about it like that, the whole arc does seem to be more touching. Interesting. I might just try watching just this arc again while adopting that point of view and see if it changes my opinion of it.

Well, with this episode, it's the last of having to catch up to where I left off the last time, and it was just as emotional this time around, as bonus got to share this arc with someone else, got them hooked on Kanon as well.
