I move forward inch by inch to get a better look...and I discover the source of static, a ghost of a child, crying..
Ahhh... the little ghosts of children... f****** bastards. One of them almost gave me a heart attack.
One day I was playing Silent Hill (or SH2, I can't recall correctly), together with my friend. He helped me with those puzzles, because he had completed the game several times already. So, I enter one of the classrooms and there's that tiny ghost moving around. Since my nerves were already on the edge and I was developing a habit of shooting everything that moves, I prepared to shoot that ghost.
However, my friend told me to calm down, because that ghost was harmless. After I indeed saw that the ghost didn't do anything I started to explore the room for something useful. During the process I passed the ghost very close by and at that moment that thing started to squeak (or whatever), that scared me so much that in the next moment I found myself cursing like hell and wildly shooting at the ghost. At the same time my friend had almost suffocated from laughter.
This whole event clearly surprised me, because by that time I had already developed a kind of immunity to fear. I've played Aliens vs Predator, FEAR, Resident Evil and other horror games and I didn't even twitch when something scary happened. So, I have to say that SH is scarier in therms of atmosphere while RE is great at scaring you at sudden moments.

1) get a big TV
2) get a room where it can be pitch black (cover windows ect...) only light from the TV
3) only play at night
4) get surround sound (crank it up)
5) get a semi comfy chair
6) change the color on the TV to black and white (this will add more grittiness)
7) get SH2 or SH3, which ever you prefer, SH3 since it had better gfx, and sound fx
8) insert game and play
9) enjoy
10) have nightmares when you go to sleep about sh
I don't know... I would say, that this procedure could make any game scary ... even minesweeper (nothing is scarier than suddenly stumbling up on a mine THAT JUST SHOULDN'T BE THERE!)

I have never played Silent Hill but have played resident evil, as some1 already said it basicaly is all about suspense but it does actually scare you when a monster pops-out just like that.

silent hill

oh freakin zeus sticks Silent Hill Hands Down! Resident Evil was class made you jump but its just infected zombies so nothing really out of control there, Silent Hill was disturbing and often highly innapropriate, dark, creepy and oh so horrible. Resi had cheap jumps and lots of Blood (no doubt its a class game , i love 1 2 and 4 so so much) Silent Hill has not only an awesome, but dodgy story with oh so unnerving set pieces and the music, oh yes the music...

See what I mean. Plus they made number 2 have the great Pyramid and hes class

Capcom and Konami must make a cross over game called "Silent Evil"!

Now that's a scary game!

Old thread! Seriously though, I think Silent Hill has Resident Evil beat these days. Not that RE can't offer some "crap your pants!" moments, but it's more action packed and the horror is more Hollywood than creepy. I do kind of miss when it was just you (the master of unlocking), a mansion, and a bunch of monsters out to eat you though.

Revelations is a bit more true to the series roots, and RE 6 seems to be a nice push back to zombies, so we'll see.

If you ask me, both series have grown stale in different directions so as to speak.

RE/Bio have strayed too far from it's roots and became a different thing altogether in the name of profit. So say one Capcom Producer

Silent Hill, while staying true to it's origins, had failed to innovate throughout the years. If Downpour is anything to go by.

Yeah , i always think that it's better to stop the series when they can't innovate anymore but well , marketing industry nowadays.

Agreed.

Though RE6 would probably give eveything as the rumors say each campaign will have something similar to the older series. Leon's scenario will be similar to RE4 and RE Revelations, Chris will be RE5+Gears of War because his the leader of alpha team, new system melee and co-op for the new guy and girl who are rumored to be Steve Burnside or Alex Wesker Sherry/Ashley.

Silient Hill in their new game DownPour still is somewhat true to the original, but now having the punch melee combat as seen in SH-origins and Home Coming.

Silent Hill definitely, although I will give an honorable mention to Resident Evil 1 (especially the remake on the gamecube). That was probably the only Resident Evil game that truly felt scary/creepy. The other RE games had their "jump" moments, but I wouldn't put them on par with the Silent Hill games as far as scare factor is concerned.

The most important thing in a "scary" horror game is atmosphere. Silent Hill almost always sets things up perfectly, like how in SH2 you would constantly hear something following you in the woods at the beginning, so you'd expect something to pop out.

Sure, the first few Resident Evil games somewhat set up atmosphere, but the later games kinda ruined it by bringing in weapons that could instant kill enemies..... though, it's always stressing when you need to reload with chainsaw guy in RE4 looming towards you~

I think Silent Hill is the more scary.

I enjoyed FEAR to, the first was 'scary' compared to the sequels but yeah, when you can slow down time, it just takes the edge off.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is scarier then Silent Hill. Unlike Silent Hill, you can't fight back and it's Lovecraftian Horror to.

I used to have the most wonderfully hellish nightmares about Silent Hill, RE can be scary (I had nightmares about the zombies after playing 2 for the first time) but I think SH is by FAR scarier.
