Honestly, if the film is just using the labels based on our cultural zeitgeist, then it is bad writing. They must be defined somehow in universe (even if onyl symbolically). So, I expect the titles to be purposeful and contextual to the universe. Why do you think I'm not? I am very interested in why they choose the title Jaeger within the context of world, but, simply put, the Kaiju came first. Consequently, the Jaegers were made in response to the Kaiju, so their labeling can only make sense in the context of the Kaiju. I personally know kaiju means 'strange beast' and jaeger means 'destroyer/fighter', but I want to know why the names were chosen by the characters in-universe. Obviously, I will only know for sure when I actually see the film, but those are some of the questions I will have on entering the theatre and I'd hope the film will answer them for me. What were the other two cities mentioned. I'm on my phone so I couldn't quite understand Charlie Hunnam... Last edited by james0246; 2013-05-17 at 16:47. |

Jaeger means "hunter" as far as I know.
Anyway I'm of the idea that all these strange names in the end have been chosen without a particular reason. This is something very typical of Anime I must say. I've grown accustomed to Japan's tendency of throwing foreign words in their shows just to increase the perceived coolness factor. Even the fact that the robots aren't simply called "robots" but are given some kind of exotic name is typical of the recent (not so much anymore actually) mecha anime. Between Endlaves, Aestevalis, Yunboroid, Cybodies and so on you really wonder what the hell they will come up with next. BTW even the names of the single robots are quite bizarre. I'd be tempted to think that "Eureka Striker" is a homage to "Eureka Seven", but it's probably the Otaku in me talking. The other ones don't seem to homage any particular robo anime. "Coyote Tango" is really very odd for the Japanese model. The closest anime title I can think of is "Coyote Ragtime show" but it wasn't really about mecha.

Kawamori is listed on imdb as someone who is given special thanks to in the crew and staff list, so Eureka striker could be a homage. Although I'd have preferred if they had hired Kawamori instead, the mechanical designs would have been better. Last edited by Bri; 2013-05-17 at 20:50. |

Sometimes I think the names of the Jaeger's are meant to be odd. Two words, totally unrelated to each other. I kinda like it, the names themselves are quite unique.
Hell, I myself tried coming up some names myself. Folly Inhibiter sound good to anyone? |

Cool list, but I have to wonder at some obvious names that weren't included. Why didn't they also dedicate the film to Eiji Tsuburaya (special effects artists who created Godzilla's look) and Tomoyuki Tanaka (producer and creator of Godzilla...not to mention Ultraman)? They were just as influential as Ishiro Honda. Hell, Akira Ifukube (composer and creator of Godzilla's roar) and Haruo Nakajima (Godzilla) also deserved a shout-out if there going through all the hassle of crediting people that obviously influenced the movie. And that's just Godzilla. Where's Go Nagai?
edit: Got to love the inclusion of Kazuyoshi Katayama. |
