Just ask a question.

I was in riichi, waiting for 3-Man. Shortly after (in the same game), the opponent opposite of my an'kan 3-Man. Can I chan'kan?

The hardest thing to do is: giving up tenpai to prevent from getting hit.

Suu anko is kind of a tricky yakuman to get. If you are on a pair wait, you can either win on a tsumo or on a discard. However, if you are on a double wait waiting for you to complete the last meld, you have to win on a tsumo. The reason for this is that if you won on a discard the last meld would be an open one, thus breaking the 4 concealed melds condition.
I hate to reference old posts, but can someone please clear this up for me?

Is a meld you ron off of considered open for the purposes of counting fu? Or just open for the purposes for suu ankoo? I went on a website that randomly generates mahjong hands to help you count points, and I saw a hand that had 3 concealed triplets. The problem though was that half the hand was opened and it had only 2 closed melds. The win was off of a Ron.

This doesn't make much sense at all. :/

1. Yes
2. No
3. That should be wrong. The San An Kou must be completely melded in the player's hand (i.e, the winning tile did not complete any meld to be included in the San An Kou), though it could complete the pair or fourth meld. Exceptions while seeing two 'open' melds would be if the player declared a hidden Kan, called a tile, then won off of the Pon. Once a player calls a tile, the only way to win with a San An Kou is a Ron to complete the pair, or a Tsumo to complete the final meld or the pair.

Thank you so much for clearing that up for me! It will be a lot easier for me to count points in real life!

***NEW RECORD!!!***

It is official. This has strictly been the worst game of mahjong that I have ever played in my life. I played so terrible in this game... In fact, this is the perfect guide on how NOT to play mahjong...

Mundane game. Though things started getting interesting in the South round. Too bad one jerk left once South started.

East 4-3: Basically fed the person to my right into a Chinitsu. Then he quit once everyone else defended against it. LOL.

South 1-5: Player to my left had Chitoi the round prior. So, I tried to replicate and failed. Oh well.

South 1-6: I had dual pon waits on 2 and 8-man. I dropped 5-man. Does that make me furiten?

South 3-0: Honitsu duel. LOL.

South 4-0: Game ends with Su An Kou. What a jerk. LOL.

WHAT THE HECK!? None of my completed hands hit!!! And of course, the very last hand (south 4) I had a sexy baiman - Potential Yakuman - hand to rip into 2nd or 1st and I get beat by a... trash hand!!! ARGGGG!!! Watch South 4... that pretty much sums up my games recently >.<

I feel marginally better if I feel that my hand was good enough to justify it discard. Sometimes. I read somewhere though that along the lines of Tenhou fixing the games for upper dan players, someone brought up the issue of getting a hot tile to test players and then later rewarding them with a big win if they break their hand. I'm always ready to write it off as occult, but I'm halfway convinced by your games and my own experience.

By the way Dasaru, regarding your discussion about suu-ankoo, here's how not to do it:

Hint: auto-win.

Doesn't look like an accident, unless y'can interpret his aim for an open tanyao, which resulted in this nagashi.
