Other colored illustration seems to stick with brown, anime has both brown and red.

His anime eyes have always been red.

The novel illustration shows them as black, despite being called brown...

Not that I trust Izuru with colors, he mentions Houki's hair is brown = obviously purple.

Well, yeah, since IS is the complete opposite of Madoka. But doesn't mean that people just buy it for that (Me=never watched Madoka).
