Neon Genesis Evangelion fits the best.

You might also try Chrono Crusade

Crest/Banner of the Stars has elements of this that show up most in Banner II

Fullmetal Alchemist
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

For non-sci that have emotional scenes:

Cross Game
Clannad
Maison Ikkoku

Cant believe no one mentioned Wolf's Rain yet. Let's say it has hopeful moments It is still one of my favorites, and I consider it one of the emotionally strongest anime I ever saw.

Emotionally very strong to me was the end of Shounen Onmiyouji, as well. The series has its dark parts, though the overall athmosphere is not dark like say Ergo Proxy. The pre-end is one of the strongest I have ever seen, if one liked the anime itself, though. I can still only comment with "woah" to this day. One has to like the chars, though, I believe.

Just to give another opinion here once, Bartender was soso to me. I like cocktails so I liked the topic, but other than that, yeah, stories you hear at every corner. I do at least

Clannad Not so much the first season but the second one. Sadness in all the right places.

Cowboy Bepop If you haven't seen this then dang. You have to stick through it till the end because that's when you get the greatest impact. It's a REALLY good anime.

Eve No Jikan Although it's a pretty short anime, it's done very well. It definitely has it's moments.

After seeing Wolf's Rain, I agree. Go watch it. Now. And when you reach the final episodes have tissues ready at hand.

You MUST see Planetes

Takes place in the near future in our solar system. One thing that really got me was how believable they make the world and technology.

Some of the most realistic interpersonal relationships I've seen in an anime. Starts out a bit silly but wastes no time delving into political and philosophical questions of equality, the goals of mankind and self realization.

I'm not a particularly sensitive guy but the last scene was powerful and beautiful. I admit I shed a tear.

Much better executed than Elfen Lied (not enough episodes to capture the manga) and I threw out gunslinger girl after two episodes. Might give it another chance though.

Lastly, if you have a tolerance for kawaii anime I recommend K-On. Just make sure none of your guy friends are around when you're watching it. Great story of friendship, though overly girly at times.

Naruto 1 - it's a tearjerker, a hopeful feel good cry

Kimi ga nozomu eien- heartbreaking drama

To love-ru OVA - super funny ecchii.

Aria the animation - feel good anime once you get into the slow pace

Definitely Maison Ikkoku.

Starts funny and goofy about the life of a college student, but as his life and hardships goes one and he gets older, things start getting serious.

Aaaaaand Legend Of Galactic Heroes, of course. A LOT of Powerful scenes in this epic series.

There is Perfect Blue from the same director that brought you Paranoia Agent.

It's pretty dark I must warn ya, and is a bit of a mind screw but it's good work.

As so many, I would also recommend Clannad(after story having more of an impact, but I would suggest you watch the first season as in it, althou it is mellow, you get to know the characters). Kannon 2006 I would also recommend.

Bartender is not so much of an emotional series but it is very meaningful as you see all kinds of people and their trouble. I second it.

I'm shamelessly bumbing and hijacking this thread as I noticed that it contains _exactly_ the kind of anime that I'm interested in. However I've seen just about everything that has been mentioned in this thread.

Are there other suggestions matching the OPs descriptions? I just can't seem to find any more emotional and interesting series =(

Based on the first episode and the manga content, I would definitely add Hourou Musuko to your list.
