Ga-Rei Zero might also work though it is more concentrated on friendship between two girls, but romance with guy also plays big role.

Inuyasha? The whole Inuyasha/Kikyo romance is one walking drama. Just try not to judge Kikyo right from the start and try to understand her.

Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom could work but it isn't really romance based.

Seconding CLANNAD, Angel Beats!, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, and Ga Rei Zero.

Recommending ef - a tale of melodies, although it is a second season and you should probably watch ef - a tale of memories first to know the characters. Kanon 2006 might work, as well as Wolf's Rain.

How does Index/Railgun fit into the "main character loses girl he likes" requirement? Touma isn't romantically interested in anybody, and NOBODY dies whenever Touma is involved in the situation...
