opinion: After Love Hina (manga) and now most of the way through Negima (manga), I'm of the opinion that Akamatsu is a better premise and idea guy than a story execution whiz. Even that is somewhat qualified by the fact his premise and ideas are a collaboration with a team of minions. I guess it is kind of like watching a Python comedy episode: about 50% brilliance, 30% hack, 20% "wtf" (then throw 5d20 for the next episode's percentage)... sometimes the story shines, sometimes you'd like to slug him for grabbing the slapstick so often.

I enjoy reading the stuff... its just that sometimes I shout "gah, stop going THAT way, this other direction was more interesting!"

It's still going strong. As a matter of fact, it seems like we only know a little more then we ever did about Negi's dad and/or the mysteries of Mahora Academy - there's still quite a ways to go. I'd guess we're probably somewhere between half way and two thirds of the way done - but all any of us would be doing is guessing at this point.

Actually, I hate to admit this, but I can't find it. Detailed spoiler time.

Spoiler:

From chapter 111 we know that Albireo is projecting, that he can only do it during the festival and on school grounds. We also learn that he's within 3-4 miles. His pactio card lists him as a librarian. From chapter 116 we learn he's been hanging around Mahora for ten years. In 117 he strongly implies that he's not human (the reason why he doesn't copy humans). In 132 we learn he's resting someplace under Mahora Academy. I guess I just always assumed that he's under the library because of the "librarian" part and the fact that it's the only landmark we know has an underground part. Practically, I don't see how it makes any difference to the answer - just replace "library" with "Mahora Academy" and it's the same thing - I will go correct that post now. As more freebie speculation regarding Albireo, a lot of people believe he might be (or be behind) the dragon in chapter 59. I don't know that I agree with that one, but there is that worrying comment about how most humans are far weaker than he himself is.

As for Kotaro - we never see or find out what he did from when Kaede left him after the school trip to volume 8, all we have is when he says that he

Wow, I had completely forgotten about all Albireo being tied to the world tree... Obviously, I need to re-read the tournament chapters...

I'm not sure this is warranted as a spoiler, but best to err on the side of caution... I had actually thought that Albireo was just saying most humans were not like him. This is probably just my faulty memory... And I seriously doubt that he's behind the dragon, but I wouldn't be surprised if he, Nagi, and maybe one or two others from Nagi's old group are sealed up under there. Perhaps the dragon/wyvern (if we listen to Yue) is just to make sure people don't release them?

Question: Has Evangeline's vampire origin being explained yet? She's a 'shinso vampire' right? Does that mean she wasn't converted? I'm not sure if this has been covered by the manga yet or not. Thanks for any reply.

Spoiler for manga spoiler, Volume 12, Chapter 109:

Evangeline explained she was living as a princess/noble little girl around the medieval era, in a castle in europe.

at the morning of her tenth birthday, she woke up and discovered that her body has already turned like this (so shinso)

the identity of the man is not revealed, but he was killed by Evangeline. (as a side note, she said that this guy was the very first person she ever killed.)


she was probably not converted by the usual "bitten/sucked" factor, while on the picture, you can see her with blood on the ground and some corpse around (you can see an arm).

we can deduce that when she woke up, she went berserk (when she was turned into a shinso) and killed someone. and then, she really woke up, realizing her new condition.

so it is possible that she was turned into a shinso with some ritual./magic

Saotome tells Chao that "it says he is a librarian belonging to Library Island." There's little reason for him to lie on the application (the logical place for Saotome to have the information from), since he already said earlier in the chapter that "Negi-kun and his cute friends already know where I'm staying." This is also the piece of the story that people usually use to indicate that Albireo either is or controls the dragon, as that's generally speaking the only place Negi and his friends know of where someone could be hiding, it's on library island, and they know where it is, but not what it contains. I'm not really saying I subscribe to that theory, but in the spirit of the Wheel of Time, loony theories should be shared.

I think it's really ironic that I located the answer while just sitting and reading my Del Rey volume 12 (and yes, I checked against my copy of the scans before deleting them).
