Shogakukan is currently streaming an animated commercial to promote Jun Sakura's Yugami-kun ni wa Tomodachi ga Inai (He Does Not Have Any Friends) manga.

The 30-second commercial features Madoka Yonezawa (White Album 2, Pretty Rhythm Aurora Dream) as Chihiro Watanuki and Kouki Uchiyama (Soul Eater, Shiki) as Yūji Yugami. A-1 Pictures (The IDOLM@STER, Sword Art Online) produced the animation for the commercial. (Note: The manga is not getting an anime adaptation. The animated commercial is just an advertisement for the manga itself.)

In the ad, Chihiro says "Yugami, the person who sits next to me is a little... I mean very different. He's always happily spending his time alone." Then Yugami says, "Hey, you should make some friends. For women it's important to become a part of a group. As for me, things like friends are completely unnecessary." Chihiro then thinks, "He isn't a bad person... probably."

It's a wonderful series, I really enjoy it. I like Yugami-kun the most, but I also enjoy reading the antics of characters like the history club gang and the baseball club. The latest chapter with the Valentine's chocolate revenge was great!

It's not too late for it to get an anime, especially since the manga just ended in Japan. But IMO imagining the voices in my head is more fun than seeing them move. For this series, at least.

I have read the first 5 volumes of this, but I can't connect to the characters at all.
They feel more like caricatures than lively personalities. Perhaps that's intentional, like it tries to be the same as the art Yagumi is practicing, or so.
Will the formula of the manga change in the newer chapters or would it be better for me to drop it?

Going more in depth with the characters at some point would suffice...

There is a bit more depth, and a lot of characters grow slowly but surely over the course of the series. Even Yugami changes quite a bit. But if you don't like it after 5 whole volumes, there's no need to force yourself to read any more.

I have really liked this series so far as well. I really enjoy its style of deadpan humor and the characters really grow on you like AnimeFangirl mentioned. I will be following this series closely, hoping for an anime adaptation.

Well, the ride is over. This is easily my favorite manga series this year, with comedy, character interaction, a colorful cast. The comedy in particular just strikes all the right notes for me. I'm really looking forward to future series from this author.

Me too. This was a really good manga, ended well without compromising everything Yugami stood for. I loved it.
