As for the ending, I will not rely on secondhand info. I need to experience it myself to understand it. Then, I might google some additional info before I draw my own conclusion.

Unfortunate side effect of any big series fandom. They NEED to focus on the shipping because it’s the only thing that makes whichever franchise interesting to them even when there is little to no presence of romance when the main story gets too boring for them. When it comes to this particular waifu war, to quote one vtuber’s weeb dad, you’re asking people to choose between kids and terrible people, so might as well choose EVA unit 1. It’s best to just leave them with their nudey settei pre artbooks they’ve collected and manga side stories and leave them be. Enjoy the series the way you want to without getting distracted.

Considering that this is the final Rebuild of Evangelion and after the information I got, and even more proof from people who actually watched it; I'll say this, as much as people want the shipping stuff to happen. It's not going to go the way some people would think. After this, Anno's done with Evangelion possibly for good.

I think you went overboard. yes that shipping always been part of Evangelion franchises since beginning. But is hardly the focus of the series. Evangalion doesn’t become popular because of shipping wars alone you know.

In fact many people that watch the movie said that the key message of the movie is “move on” which includes “move on from your shipping”

Gen Urobuchi already had a chance to give us a mecha show, and he gave us Aldnoah and he ran away after 3 episodes .

There was also Gargantia, but it was largely not his idea. He just helped wrote the twist episode.

I dare him to write a full Gundam show. Eva is a bit too formulaic in comparison. With Gundam, sky is the limit, as long as you integrate a Gundam and plenty of mechas in your story.

Aldnoah I couldn't care less TBH (Sawano Hiroyuki always delivered with his excellent soundtracks tho), but Gargantia was such a wasted opportunity when it already had all the ingredients and world-building for something truly epic. That show will always have a treasured place in my heart.

Anyway, I'd say RahXephon is possibly the closest we get to Evangelion without it being Evangelion. At least shipping isn't ambiguous there.

My core problems with EVA 3 movie are that the story transition from EVA 2's ending is so jarringly sudden & clunky. It feels like I missed a movie in between which is especially made clear with how EVA 3 doesn't have any original scenes from the preview at the end of EVA 2. I don't hate a new direction for the movie 3. But a much more natural narrative flow & less plot-dictated unreasonable characters would've done wonders (like in EVA 1 & 2 movies). Let's hope they do that for EVA 4.

I feel the same way about 3.0 but good new is that the final movie goes to length piecing 3.0 and the whole setting together. So 3.0 is not ignored but explained. Well, not that anything in Eva is ever full spelt out but its more than enough to piece everything together. I think 3.0 is the way it is for shock value and that 4.0 was meant to come out a long time ago because 3.0 and 4.0 pretty much go hand in hand. To put it another way, the pay off for watching 3.0 is in 4.0.

I remember lots of talk after 2.0 about Rebuild being a retcon to Eva. Or some alternate universe retelling. After 4.0 it feels like an updated revision to Eva. Same core meanings minus the massive depression Anno had when making the original. Heck, you kind of gain more understanding of the original ending and what Anno was trying to convey by watching 4.0.

As for the Angry fans, I don't get the sense Anno is saying screw the Otaku fans. Its just that some fans ships were sunk because Anno has a different perspective on the relationships between characters. I am very happy with how the shipping wars ended with 4.0 but I'll have to wait till everyone watches the movie before I can explain why I think 4.0 end makes sense for the characters.

I actually love all the girls so I didn't care who won in the end. It was Mari yeah, but Mari is awesome anyway so.....

More importantly the story turned out pretty well I'd say. First part the way Shinji's PTSD was a bit corny at times but it quickly got over that and in the end everyone's parts got a very nice send off. Yes, even Gendo and Yui. Hell Yui's scene at the end was one of the best in the whole show. In the end, Shinji really did inherit his shortsightedness from Gendo lol.

Misato was also lovely to the end....RIP. I'd even say this movie was her redemption for being a huge jerk to Shinji in 3.0. Asuka, she really put her actions where her words are, someone I could respect at the end instead of a perpetually angry brat. Wonder what happened to her in the new world. Only saw Rei and Kaworu in the background.


Rei.....Anything to hear Megumin voice someone again. And characterwise, still as sweet as ever.


Ay the end, when Utada Hikaru's Beautiful World played again, I heard people tear up....I did too. That was super nostalgic[


As for major weaknesses....well the world buding has many unanswered questions. But it's clear from this film that was never meant to be the main point, so I'll just let that go

This was really a grand send off. I don't know why people are upset but for me this is a very good conclusion. Couldn't ask for better. I'd personally consider this, the second End of Evangelion, which I also incidentally liked a lot

So I decided to watch this in Japanese theaters, despite my own japanese ability being about elementary-school level. Even so.. I'm gonna dare to call this Anno's masterpiece. From what it seemed to me, Anno took the Eva series and wrapped up the story pretty nicely with a beautiful bow tie.

First, I caution this, for anyone reading: take my impressions with a grain of salt, because I don't understand japanese quite well enough. But it seemed to me that the ultimate message of the movie is, "Yeah, you dun fucked up in the past. But it's time to get over yourself and move on with your life." I admit, I do have a nitpick, but that of course is with the old shipping wars.

Outside of the Eva battle with Mari in the beginning, we start out with those who are left dealing with the fallout of the third movie. Asuka being Asuka, Rei 3.0 knowing nothing about the world, and Shinji withdrawn from PTSD after the events of the third movie. We have everyone dealing as best they can with the new world otherwise, so an interesting perspective... especially as Rei bonds with Kenji's daughter (yes, you read that right- that much time has passed).

We go through this for a while, with Rei eventually taking care of Shinji... even gets him moving again. Then when she ultimately goes Pop! (I assume this has something to do with being part Angel or such)... Shinji FINALLY moves. And then the movie gets back into Eva-overdrive.

The Eva battle was pure eye-candy, with Asuka and Mari doing some badass fighting to get to the core of it all. Of course, Gendo and Futsuyuki are on their way as well. And this is where things really get cranked to 11, and completely go away from the original series. Now mind you, there was plenty of references to End of Evangelion at this point, including a Giant Rei Head. Of course, you have Misato's squad providing support, but ultimately Gendo does initiate Additional Impact.

Which leads to my biggest Goddamn! moment: it appears that the issues between Shinji and Gendo finally get aired between them... I wish my Japanese way better, but I've always been of the opinion that Gendo wanted to be a husband more than a father (there's a reason why he usually wins the sarcastic Father of the Year award). You get two Eva-01s fighting each other with Lance of Longinous (because of course Evangelion goes into WTF territory), and we even get decent backstory for Gendo. Outside this battle, Misato decides to go down with the ship (dammit Misato, handing care of your son over to Ritsuko like that!), and Mari delivers another Lance, but modified- I'm forgetting its name. And with this, Shinji apparently gets Gendo to stop being so selfish and think of Yui again. And apparently this sets Gendo at ease.

Enter Kaoru at this point, asking Shinji what he wants. I'm assuming this is where the Next New World gets built (and the background Song here was FANTASTIC!), and the implication is that everyone will be coming back. Shinji finally says goodbye to kaoru and Rei (gah! My Ship!)... hell, since the Lance has to go through Unit 01 to trigger it all, we see the last of Yui's spirit sending her son off into the New World. This almost teared me up. And this would lead to the redux of the infamous Beach Scene... except now it's just Shinji and ultimately Mari (grrr... I'll allow it, even if I'm not a fan of this new ship). Of course, all Evas are now wiped out of existence... and where does this lead? The implication of the new world seems to be about 3~4 years later, as definitely both Shinji and Mari have grown a little, and I think also Rei and kaoru appear a little older- I didn't catch enough of Asuka, and I think we see a brief glimpse of other main characters at the train platform too. So Holy Shit, a (relatively) Happy Ending for Eva? Anno must be getting old... but I'll take it, dammit!

I think the only people who are mad at this are those saying the ReBuild movies are horrible compared to the original Eva, or the usually shippers. I admit, I'm kinda in the second category; after many, many years of Asuka vs. Rei, Anno gives us all the finger by having new girl Mari be the final winner in terms of shipping. Not happy about that personally, but I can accept it.

When English Subtitles finally get put on, I'm definitely re-watching it. With the exception of 3.0, I've preferred the Rebuilds to the original, and this was a fantastic way to wrap up the series.
