I can think of plenty of anime girls that are all three.
I should've put "tragic" in quotation marks. What I'm expecting is Jun Maeda-style tragedy along the lines of Fuko in Clannad.

Ok, I get what you're saying now.

I hope the show plays her a bit more seriously than that, but we'll have to wait and see.

Artificial, pretty similar to how I sometimes felt about Rikka from Chu2byo.

Also, can someone explain to me why Mirai just stabbed someone she saw on first sight?

Man.
You guys get really ridiculous over KyoAni shows in a way that you never would over any other show from any other studio, even if they were to produce something similar.
You complain about things that you'd just blindly accept without questioning otherwise.
I, personally, thought that the bucket scene was really funny, and I really don't think it was intended to ""evoke moe"" in the insidious, ""artificial"" sense you people are using it. Stop paying attention to Azuma's moe database bullshit in 20-goddamn-13.
Is Mirai a good, well-developed character? I don't know yet, it's the first fucking episode. Wait and see before judging an entire show based on the first twenty minutes.

I think the people complaining wouldn't even be watching those 'other' shows you're referencing. Only reason they're watching this is because of KyoAn's pedigree and the praise for the original source material, so when they see the adaptation and it doesn't meet their standards, they complain about their disappointment.

Can we just stop with these pointless (and repetitive) meta arguments and get back to discussing the show itself?

Gonna have to watch a few more episodes before deciding if it'll stick, but so far, it has the exactly the stuff I don't like about these "sekai-kei" stories. The stereotypical, very closed view of the world from teenager's fantasy does very well with Light Novel readership and anime watchers, but it's pretty "meh" for an old goose like me. The dialog style is exactly what I'd expect from these type of stories.

But that's pretty much just the first impression, if they can expand the view from here and not limit to melodrama "this is my world" of handful of teens, it can certainly grow out of the mold. If not, I'll just say "meh" again and drop it.

Right now Mirai feels to me like a mix between Fuko and Nagisa of Clannad. I can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Feels like it's going to also be an unconventional (or dysfunctional?) romance to boot.

And I love the ED.

Enjoyed the first ep, can't wait to learn more about Mirai and the people after her. Will definitely be sticking with this.

BTW... did she just said
Spoiler for ep 1 - 20:32 quote:

Also... for that "tripping" part at mid of episode when she cuts the bucket...

Yes, they mess that up bad.

Because she already stopped sliding and looked up, and the scene shows nothing near her feet.

Spoiler for There is no more "sliding animation" nor "dust flying up from sliding":

Some of the critiques of the animation in this episode has been a bit startling to me.

They're valid critiques. KyoAni really did screw up that one scene.

That worries me a bit - KyoAni is typically the very opposite of sloppy.

That scene bugged me because typically people in her position don't have any issues killing monsters, but they tend to hesitate when they're faced against monsters disguised as humans.
Mirai, on the other hand, has no issues fighting a "monster" in human form, but she panics at the sight of the real thing.

^ Well, monsters that look like monsters are scarier, don't you think? Seems like the natural reaction.

Yeah, Mirai is considered unusual for being a Boundary Warden who's scared of fighting Phantasms.
Something that I really liked about this episode, and that I think is worth talking about is how they don't really treat the supernatural elements as anything particularly special, since for them, they're normal.
Because of this, we don't and probably aren't going to get an in-depth explanation of them.

Have you seen all of the stuff they screwed up on in the broadcast of Haruhi '06?

...... I'm not exactly sure what this shows wants to be?

school romance - with the exaggerated cherry blossoms scene
mystery supernatural - the demons and demon slayer and all that
action - end of episode 1 seems to be bursting for more
moe - female lead, clumsy but she can fight?

well, I just hope the show can somehow define itself better as it moves on, and not try to be everything at once. I quite like KyoAni's art style, so am very happy about an action series produced by it.

As long as its corrected for the Blu-ray release, it won't matter in the end.

So is Kyo-Ani giving a chance to a newbie director for the first episode or something ?
