And moe sells. So those with a problem with moe in this title should get over it already.
Like I mention above. I'm not against moe shows as they usually tend to be funny. Except with Sora no Woto, the humour here is bland for my tastes. And even as a slice of life, it must have been the most unexciting one scenario yet. Waiting on the phone. Except you're watching someone get bored.

But with Sora no Woto, it tries to have a significant background which constantly clashes with it's more lighthearted feel. At least with Hidamari Sketch, you don't expect any more then just slice of life. So in short, the directors should have picked a direction and stuck with it from day one if they want to focus more on military fail moe for laughs because now they've also got an audience interested in their speculah. And above all for me, if it were a choice between moe comedy or post apocalptic and war themes I'd choose the latter.

And damn the Germans.

The festival started and ended the episode and served to make its own points on the state of the characters. It wasn't that different from Kanamemo. Most of the "serious" stuff occured en flashback.
Yes the festival was there but it was still a lot less significant that Meganekko Mugi's flashback. So still a wham episode.

He mentions that he is returning tomorrow and has dropped by in the hope of meeting Rio.

The real beauty of this ep is how most of the action is in the back ground. Kanata and the kids are the only ones that doesn't feel anything wrong. The local community clearly does feel uneasy and requested Rio to give them a non PR sugar coated version of recent news as they regard her as one of the locals. I wouldn't be surprised in next ep if Krauss' mission to the fort is to escort Rio back to HQ.

It actually reminds me of the build up part from 2012.

Wait what. This episode had 2 real moments that can even be considered moe, and it's so obvious what those scenes were, and am I supposed to operate under the belief that even one moment of moe makes an entire episode a de-evolution into moe? (and is moe itself even a de-evolution)
As long they don't go overboard with it and have it in every episode, then it won't' hurt. I'm more concentrated on how the plot is going in the background.

I give props to Kanata... she seems to be very dedicated to her duty, but maybe a bit too much, but I hardly call that moe, except the dress that Yumina dresses her in, something that comes out from a cosplay cafe. This make you wish there was such things as a cordless phone.

It's because the rest of the squad said to her that her duty was so important that if she would sabotage whole squad would be punished.
Kanata believed them, I guess.

The whole idea is that they can still live a good life while having a dark past. f you can only live with one of the both extremes then I don't think that it is really the problem of this particular show.

How was it any less significant? It reinforced the point of the episode. The flashbacks may have revealed more about the past, but with some very experimental exceptions, stories don't move backward.

Each episode confirms for me that Noel is doing "something" other than her regular duties... Maybe she's the one who runs the distillery... during the night. Maybe she tastes a bit too much of it.... and then she has that iron trap memory for everything....

never seen 2012, but it seems like what u mentioned, something is going on and it was covered by Kanata's personal show in this eps

It isn't unusual for even the most-loved and greatest anime to have a problematic episode (be it pacing, time budget, animation quality, etc). It is probably best to wait til series completion before either kicking or praising this episode too much.

By the way, how come this is slice-of-life, I do not think that in life it is a common occurrence: "high school adolescents to have the mental capacity of pre-school kids at their best" ... and don't bash, I am sarcastic. On a more serious note, this show has a serious identity crisis, projected to its audience

No Kanata drank quite a lot and she isn't drunk. Not bad subbing. Remember Kanata isn't suposed to know about the Calvados.

A voice of wisdom. But I'd still like my 24 minutes back.

But that seems to be working in its favor. If it was a full on gritty war drama, the odds that I would've chosen to watch it are low. If it was a full throttle lighthearted cute girls show, the chance that you would be watching it is also low. The fusion of elements allows us to meet and have these ideological battles.

That is also an element, but not the one that had shown up in the discussion over the past few pages.

If it were a full throttled moe slice of life I'd still watch it as it isn't trying to move back and forth with something else that is really clashing as of late. But of course that depends on if the comedy is funny or not.

And what's so bad about war dramas? I think in the long run if it were a choice between war dramas and moe comedy I tend to pick the former.

Because believe it or not, I am the majority-minority. The rare idiot whose tastes seem to be the almost diametric opposite of most of the board, putting me more in line with the "otaku" that people like to blame across a language barrier and an ocean. I prefer comedy and various types of endings/openings/character songs over any attempts at "seriousness" or even shipping. I don't justify liking shows by saying they are a parody; I just prefer things to be exceptionally silly. And experimental. My ideal of a show is something with Shinbo's animation quirks and Keiichiro Kawaguchi's sense of humor. Most of the shows people list when talking about "serious" shows, I haven't watched the majority of. If I were to use comic books as an analogy, I would be a Silver Age fan.

I am myself, and proud to be myself. Eccentric, twice as prone to puns and wordplay, gimmicks and not being completely straightforward.

Well I appreciate SOW as a experiment but often I keep on finding in trying to be experimental with the genre, it's falling flat on it's face due to it's attempts to balance the two genres it fits into.
