So a love and disaster story with a girl, and a guy who gets transferred into a chair. lol And the second coming of Kyubey...apparently.

The guy became the chair...that...kind of explains some things...

Then again, not sure that even reaches 5/10 on the anime wackiness scale.

Ah, we can see that The Butcher's influence has spread, considering we have Kyubi's cousin involved.

It DOES look kinda interesting... but again, I'm going to wait for reviews before I commit. See f this is more 5 cm or Your Name. Though I suppose that Weathering with you has more similarities.

Is there anything that is supposed to be important about there being a sponsor from every prefecture?

Well...I guess in a week we'll start hearing from people who saw it in Japan as to where Shinkai is at now.

Isn't part of the concept that the girl has to prevent or undo disaster /open doors/ spread all over the islands? I thought it was something to do with that...

Japanese reviews are out. Many of them say something similar like:

- It's a great and powerful film.
- The story might feel too heavy* for some people but it can be their motivation as well.

Spoiler for Plot spoiler - What kind of heavy?:

^
The official even issued a warning about it.

It's better if we keep away from Japanese SNS and the like to avoid spoilers for now. With that being said, I can see where the reception is coming from: the first twelve minutes of the film are intense and jump immediately into things. Unfortunately for some folks, this movie does appear to have a strong similarity to the aesthetic from Children Who Chase Lost Voices, but going from the reception, this might not be such a bad thing.

I'm glad they got Richard Eisenbeis on it; I rather liked his Violet Evergarden: The Movie review, which was competently written, and while, it'll be an 11 month wait before I read Eisenbeis' review of Suzume no Tojimari to avoid the spoilers, I think it should be a fair representation of the film. Previously, when Kim Morrissy wrote reviews, especially for coming-of-age and slice-of-life works, they typically misread the themes entirely and tended to nitpick on things that aren't issues.

11 months? Weird - I got the feeling some countries were getting it Q1 2023. Indications were Australia would. Sure, it's not the 1 month for Your Name but it's something. Did recall Your Name had a 'very' brief run for Oscars reasons (and got ignored) and eventually got a run in the US. Would have thought Shinkai would have clout for cinema runs, or is he still that ignored over there?

One of these days I'm going to ask the Internet if predictability is actually a bad thing. By all accounts, it sounds like this movie also ends the same way as Your name and Weathering with you- and yes, it's the ending that 100% will make or break a Shinkai film for me. So far, it sounds good, but I'm going to keep looking around until I get details for it.

My apologies: I am referring to 11 months for the BDs. The international screenings should happen much sooner than that (if rumours are to be believed, as early as January 2023), and at least in the United States, I imagine that screenings will be as easy to get to as something like Top Gun or The Avengers.

Having said this, only one theatre (in a city of 1.5 million) will likely screen it where I am. When Your Name was running, the only screening we ever got was one, on a Wednesday afternoon at two. I have no idea why the local movie theatres are so opposed to anime movies (the same thing happened with Madoka Magica: Rebellion, where they did two screenings, one on a Monday morning, and the other was a Sunday evening). I ended up watching the movie on a flight from Osaka to Hong Kong a few months after that, and since I won't be travelling this time around, my best bet will be the BDs.

So it seems it will be only streamed outside of Japan and not until April 12...

That...is mystifying...5 months from starting in Japan?

There's word going round that they already have subs?

They sure know how to nuke interest in what is supposed to be the most noted animated movie maker of recent times.

I see no problem with this if it means letting the rest of us watch this movie sooner.

The CR news said they're going to release it in April in theaters only.

Edit: Here, in English: https://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-ne...ume-anime-film

So still have to wait a year for the BD as usual.

That makes more sense if it's theatres only...still a wait but I guess they want a synced global release.

It was too good to be true, that they'd do streaming so soon.

I think it's more to prevent the movie being all over the internet within a day. I own Your Name, Garden of Words and Beyond the Clouds, so I'll get Suzume if it ends up good, but Weathering With You leaves me with some concern.
