so I understand, the bear was horrible, but the episode had several good times, the opening was the best large-scale warfare I've seen in anime for many years. Why is this being discarded? Am I wrong to think that many anime fans are superficial?

There are countless moments in american movies and series where the CG is terrible, but even then there is not all this excitement. The deer of The Walking Dead has already been forgotten.

Nowadays, age doesn't matter in whether a character is considered loli or not.

I don't think this is being discarded, it's one of the most hyped shows of the season...

Personally though, I found the first episode fairly underwhelming. The CG animals wouldn't be a deal breaker for me, but the rest... choppy editing, exposition hell, coincidences hell, convoluted set-up, distracting "epic" BGM, and I found the lead guy annoying. (Yes, you're the immortal Sugimoto. We know.) Also, I'm not sure I'm interested in the story, it has a kind of "Jack London meets Western tropes" vibe that might be good but might be something I'm perhaps a bit too jaded for.

I'll give it a few more episodes, but this season already has so many shows...

(By the way... was that a wolf or a train?! What a weird howl. )

^To be honest the reason I’m sticking around is because of the two characters.

I didn't think she would be that expressive. Hope the anime will do these faces justice.

This seems like prejudice to small people.

I certainly hope so too. They'll make great avatars.

I liked both main characters in this show, brave and pragmatic Asirpa in particular, more than any of the characters in KOKKOKU.

I, like Enzo, look back fondly on the days when many series ran for two full cours, and some ran longer. One-cour shows became more common after the recession as skittish production committees limited their financial exposure by committing to only 11-13 episodes instead of 24-26.

Me, though, I also look back on those days and remember all those crappy shows that ran for 24-26 episodes instead of being done with in 11-13. I do wish we had more long anime today, but longer doesn't necessarily mean better. There were so many shows that didn't really have enough content for two cours, or shows that struggled with stretching out their budget, and so on. (I mean, it's not like anime as a whole was better back then. There were trends I didn't enjoy just as there are trends I don't enjoy now, and for each great show we had lots of uninteresting or downright bad ones, just like now. And with more shows to choose from today at least there's more chance for me to find interesting ones, and can freely ignore stuff I'm not fully interested in.)

Sugimoto 'Respect my Loli' mode, and yeah don't worry Asirpa is as expresive as ever. So Asirpa is even ilegal to Ainu Standards, so keep at bay lolicons.

So we've a Shinsengumi Samurai in the hunt...and that twist at the end....
