I suggest you Yosuga no Sora. It's a sad anime, but doesn't have any scene when the character dies.

Personally the only somewhat sad story was Akira's, i think the other stories were not that sad though. Also finding the manga of it is not easy.

5cm per second is the poster child example of this. There's both a movie and a manga. I'd VASTLY recommend the movie though.

I never said there wasn't, but finding it is harder. Bbecause i don't think many people have scanlated it completely.
(edit, i made a simple search now and it was not that hard to find it completely. I never knew people actually scanned the compace magazine )
Also the manga was about Sora (from what i could recall , it was quite time when i saw it on the comp ace) and her story was not that sad.
