Future Transportation

The Hyperloop is real, and we watched the first test
in the Nevada desert:

"One month before Hyperloop One technologies ushered a pack of
cynical journalists to see the first-ever demonstration of a Hyperloop
mag-lev train in the desert outside Las Vegas, it didn’t exist.

“We said ‘It’ll be May 10,” and we picked a day,” CEO Rob Lloyd
confessed. “And three weeks ago, it wasn’t done.” Sure, the
world-class engineers had the science down, developed a reliable
propulsion system, and ran the numbers, but physical testing? Not
quite yet.

Despite endeavoring to build a futuristic system that seems more at
home on the pages of an Isaac Asimov novel than in the Nevada
desert, the company felt so confident that it invited tech journalists
from every major publication to see the thing in person. Like Babe
Ruth calling his shot, Hyperloop One took a calculated leap of faith
that — like Babe’s — paid off in spades.

After standing before the steel test track outside Sin City on the day
Lloyd promised to unveil it, I can vouch that the first Hyperloop
prototype is very much real. And the future of transportation
technology is quite literally riding on it."

Uber plans self-flying drone taxis to beat city traffic:

"The taxi-hailing app is working on technology that would allow airborne
passenger drones to fly its users short distances around cities, it has
emerged, raising the prospect of a future in which skylines are dotted
with Uber aircraft shuttling commuters back and forth.

Jeff Holden, Uber’s head of product, told technology website Recode that
the company is researching “vertical take off and landing” (VTOL)
technology. Instead of the helicopter-style rotor blade drones, VTOL
aircraft have fixed wings like planes, enabling them to fly silently, while
taking off and landing vertically."

Up, up and away: Passenger-carrying drone to fly in Dubai:

"Dubai hopes to have a passenger-carrying drone regularly buzzing through the skyline of
this futuristic city-state in July.

The arrival of the Chinese-made EHang 184 - which already has had its flying debut over
Dubai's iconic, sail-shaped Burj al-Arab skyscraper hotel - comes as the Emirati city also
has partnered with other cutting-edge technology companies, including Hyperloop One.

The question is whether the egg-shaped, four-legged craft will really take off as a
transportation alternative in this car-clogged city already home to the world's longest
driverless metro line."

Google co-founder’s Kitty Hawk unveils its electric
autonomous flying taxi:

"Kitty Hawk, the company led by the ‘godfather of self-driving cars’ Sebastian Thrun
and backed by Google co-founder Larry Page, has revealed its Cora aircraft, which is a
hybrid vertical take-off and landing design that can take off like a helicopter but fly
like a plane.

The vehicle can travel at over 93 miles per hour, and has a range of around 62 miles
on a single charge. It’s wingspan is around 36 feet, making it very small for a
commercial aircraft, which is idea for its intended use in and around urban areas. It
has room for two passengers on board, with side-by-side seating including one where
you’d normally find the pilot.

In this aircraft’s case, neither a pilot nor a pilot’s license is even necessary for its
operation, however. Kitty Hawk’s intent is to have the aircraft certified for fully
autonomous operation by launch, which it hopes will happen sometime around 2021
once it completes testing with New Zealand, its first partner on the government and
regulatory side."
