While this is neat news, it's kind of a shame that no Switch port was announced. That, and it would have been nice to have the option to switch between either the "brother" or "daddy" versions of the story.... but whatevs. Still looking forward to this!

The original Nier had two versions yes. Supposedly the Replicant ver. with the younger Nier is considered the "canon" version, though don't quote me on that.

Gesalt was mainly made for the West, because they thought playing an adult would appeal to Westerners more. The original Nier is the teenage one, they've most likely chosen to remaster Replicant because it's the game that fits their original vision best. From what I can tell, Nier's age and his relationship to Yonah are the only changes between the two versions.

The game's been out for a while. Anyone playing/played it?

I had only played Nier automata and never the original Nier, so this was a completely new experience for me. After seeing videos of the old game, it might have been for the best because this version made some major improvements.

This was a fantastic experience. I'll have my complaints first to them out of the way: the side-quests with the exception of the ones about the old lady from the lighthouse (so sad) and a couple others, fucking sucked. They're all fetching quests, which are made more tedious by the fact there are loading screens everywhere (second complaint). They had nothing to the lore and tell us almost nothing about the characters. At some point during the first half I got sick of them and stopped doing them and the game suddenly became a lot more enjoyable. The ones from the second half are a bit better, and more importantly actually given sizable rewards (money and weapons). I ended up completing 76% of them, but I could and probably should have done less. Waste of time, really.

And that's it. Everything else was really great. Artistic direction is amazing, music is fantastic, and graphics are pretty good for a remaster that is sort of but not really a remake. The story and characters were just as engaging as I was expecting. I'm kind of curious about the differences between this and Gestalt, because Nier's personality completely reflects his age and I can't imagine a father acting the same. I feel like the romance with Kainé and ending D must have felt pretty out of place in Gestalt too (Kainé is only 17).

Now to get into spoilers...

Spoiler for Ending A to E spoilers:

I expected it, but the game is incredibly sad and tragic. Finding out what the Shades were saying on the second playthrough really changes everything. The hardest part for me was killing the babies (yup...) while the older Shade was begging me to stop. I thought nothing of it on my first playthrough since I didn't know any better but it killed me in subsequent ones.

Kainé and Emil's entire backstories are just incredibly sad. I'm glad this remaster threw Kainé a bone by adding ending E and allowing her to reunite with Nier after he sacrificed himself. It was fun playing her too, shame that route is so short. As for Emil, sadly we already knew from Automata that he never got his body back and spent thousand of years alone.

A shame the greatest mystery in the game was never solved: why Kainé walks around in underwear. I got a conversation between her and Weiss where she explains she has several of the same outfit and changes every day but that's it.

There is some confusing stuff too, like why there are children walking around. Replicants can't reproduce, can they? Does this mean new people are introduced into society by Devola and Poppola? Replicant Nier apparently had a mother, so was he adopted? The way the sytem works is rather fuzzy. There is a lot of background information the game doesn't tell us.

Yes, the Replicants can be created based on the Gestalts' data whenever they want, provided the Gestalts didn't go crazy. It's just that the Replicants don't know any better.

But because they're inherently linked to the Gestalts they're created on, if the Gestalts go wild, the Replicants will get the Black Scrawl and die.

I'd say calling the player "soulless" is the exact opposite of what the game is trying to convey.

The point is that given each character's perspective (and lack thereof), what they did was justified given their knowledge and lack of knowledge. They can only care about the things they know.

This is also why it was so easy to blame the Devola and Popola models, given how much more they knew compared to everybody else. Why did they let Replicant Nier go so far until it was too late to stop him?

But yeah there is some obvious guilt slinging by hindsight. It's for the player really, the characters did what they had to do.

I had to hit the wiki to even understand the origin of the Black Scrawl.

Since Weiss notices Kainé has the same markings as Yonah, I thought it meant Yonah was possessed by her Gestalt and the Black Scrawl was a result of her resisting the merging process.

The game really doesn't tell you much about the background. We're not even told how and why the Grimoires were created (since the story told by Popola was obviously bullshit), or why original Nier had Noir in the prologue.

I seem to recall Automata doing a way better job at explaining stuff.
