The manga series 'Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san' is receiving an anime adaptation by NHK.

Plot

Quote:
Within the winding streets of Kyoto's geisha district, there lives a 16-year-old girl named Kiyo. After failing to become a Maiko, an apprentice traditional Japanese performer, Kiyo works as the caterer for her troupe. This is the story of her daily life.

Oh Kyoto, a place with a lot of interesting stories to tell. This time, it's about a failed maiko and what kind of dishes an aspiring maiko is taught to prepare.

Definitely looking forward to this one...

EDIT:

...but seeing that promotional video kinda worries me. Will the show be like that? It's not like I don't like the style—I feel like it may affect how the food looks like, which should be important in a cooking-themed slice of life like this.

I absolutely adore this manga. Not only is it super fluffy and relaxing, but I also love how Kiyo manages to solve (or at least, alleviate) nearly every issue the girls face through the right application of food.

It's not really about the food but that does play a big part in the series. It's more about Kiyo-chan as the cook at the centre of a household of junior geishas-in-training, keeping them fed while they go about their daily lives. Kiyo-chan and her friend Suu-chan came from the countryside in the north of Japan and the dishes she makes, which she learned from her Granny are simple and filling rather than exotic. The other main thread of the story is the life of maikos and junior geishas in Kyoto, there's a lot of behind-the-scenes detail of the maiko's world involving their home life, training, tourists, hairdressing, clothing, even umbrellas.

It's a super-sweet and fluffy series, I've been expecting it to get an anime for a long time now. It's likely it will be short episodes, maybe 10-12 minutes but we'll see.

The official English site for Maiko-san is up. The series will air internationally on NHK World starting February 25.
Also, please watch the trailer in the website. It's a substantial improvement over the first PV.

Episode 3:

Anyway, it actually didn't occur to me that Kiyo is a maiko-in-training even though I'm sure they said that only maikos (and special assistants) can enter a maiko dorm. Kiyo was simply a better fit for housework than general maiko duties, I guess. Moving on, holy cow, the oyakodon and bite-sized cutlet sandwiches look delicious.

On the flipside, this episode had some somber moments with Kiyo having to leave behind her grandmother on the journey to Kyoto and that close call that almost ended her times together with Sumire. The previous dorm cook's back problem was what saved the moment. Sumire needs Kiyo as much as Kiyo needs Sumire, especially as her debut dawns near.
