I share Yot's interpretation of this marketing ploy. They cater towards the AS fans, but never going for the umpf for the sole purpose of milking the franchise.

So, are we arguing about folding now?

To make it easier for me, I just tend to think of folding as something similar to warp speed, hyperspace or what have you. Just another means of faster-than-light travel in another sci-fi/space fantasy setting.

It's not that hard to grasp in a general sense. What could take years and years of normal space travel can be reduced to minutes, or even hours at the most.

Yeah. Until in a decade or so, when we might find out the "truth". For now, it's more financially lucrative to yank at the fans chain to give them almost what they want, but not quite enough to keep them coming.

It worked with the movies.

I second this motion and completely agree. Sheryl needs to go save the princess. Preferably Pilot!Sheryl if I may use an anime internetism.

As for folding, I think part of it is just that the colony ships are all looking for habitable worlds, so they frequently make stops and rarely make Folds, probably because it takes a huge amount of energy and a lot of preparation to make a fold. They probably only rarely initiate a fold of the entire fleet, and instead pick a nice system to float around in for a time while other ships fold to chart nearby star systems, using the fleet as a base of operations. I doubt charting would simply be "Not habitable, move on", but more they'd do a thorough job since they were there and obviously the fleet was in no pressing danger. There could be valuable resources or Protoculture ruins in any area of the star system, and that's a lot of space to cover. I mean consider the size of Sol. Now imagine you're charting dozens of these star systems all roughly the same size. That's just gonna take time, and there are millions of star systems in the Milky Way galaxy for all the fleets to go around and visit, and it only gets thicker closer to the Galactic Core.

Think like in Battlestar where they'd leave the fleet somewhere safe and send Raptors out to scout and find planets, or stick around in order to collect valuable resources needed for the fleet. Frontier is apparently ecologically self-sufficient, but they could still use fuel for their engines (I think that's just hydrogen) and various metals and other material for expansions, development, housing, luxury items, and, of course, the military.

Would you like to give Tak the courtesy of explaining why this isn't so? (Might be helpful, you never know!)

I don't think I've ever said ANYTHING to the effect that they're leaving doors open in order to "milk the franchise." So where Tak gets that is beyond me. I've never said it, and I don't believe it.

So I'd rather hear why Tak thinks I said that.

I'm guessing Takky combined something you said with something Thess said - wasn't Thess the one who was all about a certain ending being perfect for marketing?

I think Tak was referring to this:

Since the "art" was never specified, perhaps he understood you to mean "cunning" instead, in a shrewd businessman sort of way. A quick clarification with regards to the former should sort things right up.

And I stand by it. It was well played (I can't wait to watch this movie).

You can pretend I'm on your side on this, if you like, but you'll only be pretending.

EDIT: Anyway, at the Frontier Fan Club event a few weeks ago, Frontier was declared officially OVER. So no milking will be done.

And you are still circling around without providing anything remotely resembling an explanation to your aforementioned statement. But whatever...

Right, as if that will prevent related merchandise from releasing in the near and further future. That is milking, my friend.

Huh? My thoughts on the matter are not what you said they were. What further explanation do you need? I don't think they ended the series or the movie the way they did in order to "milk the franchise." I simply don't.

And an official Alto/Sheryl (or Alto/Ranka, or Leon/Sheryl) ending would mess up the merchandise HOW exactly...?

Right, so what is your:

"Me, I just marvel at the way they seem to continually give AruSheri fans almost exactly what they want to hear, but never quite manage to push it all the way.

There's a certain artfulness to it, I suppose." in reference to? Care to explain? Wouldn't hurt, other people want to know, too.

The hell you talking about. I only stated the declared end to Frontier would not prevent further merchandise from releasing. That is milking. I have no idea what you are on.

Artfulness, as in skillfulness. They're skilled at NEARLY giving AruSheri fans everything they want.

Is there some other definition of artfulness that I'm unaware of, which means "milking a franchise"?

Okay...you said: They cater towards the AS fans, but never going for the umpf for the sole purpose of milking the franchise.

I take that to mean you think they left the ending open in order to milk the franchise. Am I wrong about that?

Artfulness in what? Artfulness in a business way? Artfulness in a playful way? Artfulness/skillfulness in what? You got to be skillfulness in something. You left an incomplete statement.

As far as I am concerned, the ending is done and complete. The umpf I am referring to is the happier interpretation most AS fans want, but while they will give it to us and hinting it in related merchandise, they won't give an official word for it.

STORYTELLING. When do I ever talk about business?

Uh-huh...so if they gave a closed ending, they couldn't make merchandise? Is that what you're saying?
