Man, Aletta is adorable. I was really worried when she headed back to her world: a homeless person who faces severe discrimination suddenly having money could easily have gone really bad for her, but the dragon declaring that Aletta is part of her treasure and placing her under her protection turned that into warm fuzziness.

I can't wait to see more.

Today's Menu: We got a Morning Special consisting of simple toast with butter, bacon, egg omelette, and fresh salad. Serves 3. There's also the Chicken Teriyaki Rice and Curry Rice, and the Beef Stew that cost 4 gold coins (~400,000 yen) for a whole pot of it.

As a crazy person who focus on weird elements of a show, I need to bring up the thing with currency.

The chef made the assumption that 10,000 yen, Japanese student minimum wage, is worth 10 silver coins. Using current real life exchange rate it actually adds up to 480 yen per coin, assuming it is 8 grams per coin. So he is paying her 4800yen worth of silver. But this likely assumed to put into account that rare metals are less rare in real life than in fantasy medieval worlds. It also makes his mental math easier to directly convert Yen to silver coins.

Also for completion's sake, 13th century medieval society converts between 12 to 18 silver coins to a single 8 gram gold coin.

A 13th century labourer need to spend 3 days to earn a gram of gold, or 24 days to earn a full 8 gram gold coin.

This meant gold and silver are about 8-10 times more valuable in medieval society than the modern day.

It also means the waitress is basically being paid the equivalent of three weeks wages for every day of work she does. But that's the difference with having minimum wage laws. Ancient world's wages sucked.

The only problem for Aletta is that Earth has roughly the same discrimination against nonhuman races, so she is rather lucky to have the chef welcome her into Neko-ya.

Also another point of trivia, that pot of beef stew was paid for with 4 gold coins, which after a few conversions end up being $300 USD worth of gold in our world. But in the medieval fantasy world it likely has something like ten times the purchasing power, leading to the pot of beef stew costing $3000 equivalent in the fantasy world. The dragon doesn't care, over-paying is what powerful people do to show their superiority.

I'm wondering... is Aletta an anime-only character, or is she someone from a future chapter beyond the material currently translated into English? Since the material for next week's episode is the actual start of the LN, and episode 1 also rolled in material from Chapter 5 with the Dragon Queen.

Was still enjoyable anyways, since Aletta a cute.

And now I'm reminded I haven't had breakfast yet.... (now in want of Breakfast Special T_T )

She's a dragon. She has gold in abundance. Besides, she considers the restaurant to be a part of her treasure, so it's not like the money's actually gone from her perspective: she just put it in a different place.

I suspect the master gets away with his prices because, as far as the residents of that world are concerned, his food is excellent beyond compare. You get what you pay for, basically. In their world I imagine if a master chef were to set up business somewhere he or she would be able to basically charge whatever they want: there probably aren't any regulations about business practices over there. People in that world would just expect that, so if this restaurant comes across as being somewhat pricey, well, they're paying for quality.

I see it differently. She doesn't HAVE to pay, she is a dragon, a great one at that. However she is clearly someone of stature in their society, and being generous to one's subjects show how magnanimous she is. I don't see her "paying" for the stew, as much as she is gifting him gold, while he pay tribute in return. The gold was not meant to be a transaction for the stew, that would imply she is an equal to a human. No, this is a greater being showering her blessings for a subject who pleased her.

It's basically how I interpret the scene, using my understanding of medieval politics. He gives her what she asks for every week, the gold is separate to that.

No, she's in the cover of all four volumes of the LN. Actually, she's alone in the covers expect volume three where she shares the cover with Kuro (the elf girl).

Basically, Aletta is the poster girl of the series.

What's the term in Japanese? 看板娘? (Kanban musume). I am not sure it is a real thing or not as the only time I know the word was use is in an anime. But yeah, Aletta is the poster girl for multiple definitions of the word. She is on the book cover, she is a literal maid serving the customer, and also the main young girl appeal for the franchise.

I was actually thinking about the possibility of how Aletta might still face problems from some of the customers due to her status, but then the dragon went and claimed her to be part of her treasure so I guess was worried for nothing. After all not many people will be willing to get violent with a girl under that dragon queen's protection, not to mention they wouldn't want to the chef to ban them from eating there again.

I have also heard it used in a preview video for a visual novel, as well as in various anime here and there. It seems to be a legitimate phrase for a character (or occasionally a set of characters) who serve as the "face" that represents a franchise to the public.
