I can bet he got the idea from there. I think I must mention that it is not the first time it has been documented that the sun has a magnetic monopole. As you can see from the link, in 1965 it happened for two or three months. From what I understand IRL there are two scenarios:

1. magnetic pole points toward the sun for large period of time (years) = We go into an ice age

2. magnetic pole points away from the sun for large period of time (years) = earth magnetic field gets pummeled constantly (think this solar flare) which would cause the aurora borealis to be seen south (in japan and even the caribbean) and wreck land based electricity lines and knock out of commision most of the satellites in orbit. Over the years I think it would accelerate global warming, warming the seas to 40º C and creating another mass extinction.

I have not played the VN, but I think the sun exploding is a feint for other plot driven events.

Magnetic monopoles are particles, and have never been observed by multiple independent observers. They are a purely theoretical existence.

As highly ionizing particles, they would be preferable over lower ionizing particles in a particle accelerator. The sun is, in essence, a particle accelerator.

Throw in some sci-fi to drastically increase the effect of one ionizing particle over another, and it's not a big leap to see where they may be going in regards to the sun.

I wonder how exactly you can confirm the existence of monopoles on the sun.
They are supposed to be so elusive particles that I doubt you could determine their existence from so far away.

It would make more sense if those particles were found after they reached the earth. Even if from afar they noticed some strange behavior in the sun that is compatible with the scenario of monopoles being there, that still wouldn't be absolutely conclusive evidence, I think.

I am also wondering why they chose november 2000 as the time where they found those monopoles. The article that I linked in my previous post describe events that happened in that very year but from march to may.
Then the north and south pole flipped on 15 February 2001

November 2000 is in the middle, but nothing strange happened at that time, to my knowledge.

By the way apparently this reversal happens every 11 years or so, so for a long time it was predicted that the next would happen in 2012. More recent observations however seem to agree that it will be a little late and that it will happen in 2013.

It may seem nonsensical, but the north/south pole of a planetary body or stellar object have nothing to do with magnetic monopoles, though the similarity in terms can make it an easy mistake to make.

And, because this is supposed to be the same world as that of Steins;Gate, it should be noted that some have theorized that the existence of magnetic monopoles could have rather dramatic effects on the relationship between spacetime and the worldline.

NitroPlus published the PC versions and provided some support (CG work, programming assistance, etc.). On the Robotics;Notes site, they're credited under "Cooperation" (along with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), as opposed to any of the distinctive billings.

Oh man, mentioning people trying to fix the sun is making me flash back to Sundiver, although I barely remember the plot of that by now since it's been too many years since I read it.

Anyway the bottom line is
that we have a really weird giant ball of hydrogen floating nearby that's the reason for life on Earth? Awesome, was not expecting to learn some actual science as a by product of a Science;Adventure game. xD

It's 2012! There's a mega solar flare coming right at us! We're DOOOOOOOOMED! D:

Joking aside, I'm pleased with how the story unfolds. Not too fast, not too slow.
This show is a definite keeper, and I can't wait for the next episode.

EDIT: Frau sounds like a mix between Harumi Kiyama from Railgun and Daru.

It'll be a special moment when we get to see Aki's hair down.

New Episode

Spoiler for 6:

The story is getting more interesting and Kai sure is.... interesting in a way that she is brave and enter and investigate things that are normally scary and dangerous but he also loose interest fast. If he finds no further clue. he lost motivation -_- more problem for Kai in the next episode.

Not as interesting as last week's episode, but still good.

I didn't expect Frau and Jun to join in the same episode. All members of the club are now assembled. Frau's condition for helping Subaru was pretty funny... that girl's a total pervert

The drama between Subaru and his father is indeed pretty cliché, but I'm welcoming any kind of development Subaru can get. He had been little more than a joke character up until that point.

I did not have a good reaction to this episode. The last three minutes killed everything I liked about it with one of the most pathetic "father is an asshole" moments I have ever seen. It's going to take a while for R;N to get in my good graces at this rate.

Spoiler for Ep. 6:

I want more Frau..... Her BL fantasies are rather entertaining. Guess it was Jun's imagination though.

The sci-fi elements of Robotics;Notes aren't as pleasing to me so far. It's hard to describe what about them doesn't sit well. A related reason is that we've been teased with a variety of surface clues that are greatly disjointed; having a hard time piecing anything together at this point. That boat scene begs explanation.

I'll keep watching for now. Just gotta wait till the appetizers stop serving.

you have to realise that it's Subaru that broke the promise first, his father is fully entitled to do that (well, minus the physical violence)

I got what the scene was going for, but it was jus too stupid and painful to take seriously. The physical violence was the thing that got to me. Oh, and the fact that the father became all hammy and launched into some bullcrap speech about robots and fishing whilst trying to break the robots themselves, causing all subtlety to practically vanish. Top it off with that Clannad-like fainting scene and I had nothing but hatred for what was up to then an episode I actually liked.

The music recorded in the tape alongside the device that sends signals to space really reminds me Close Encounters of the Third Kind

I wonder if there will really be aliens in this story, as I speculated before. The evidence so far seems to suggest so, but it might turn out to be something else.

On an unrelated note I really like Furugoori Kona, she's the best character in this anime so far for me. I wish she had more screentime.

Anyway, after six episodes I must say that I find that this story lacks something. While there's obviously a lot going on, and there are quite a lot of mysteries that have been hinted, somehow I don't feel involved. It's probably something with the general atmosphere, the various characters are a bit disjonted and I don't quite feel their emotions enough to empathize with their situation.

The mystery based on (pseudo)scientific facts it's also a bit too obscure to work succesfully as time travel did with Steins;Gate. I never really heard of monopoles before, and the only thing I can do is to trust that if you find them on the sun it's "bad". I have no idea of what could have caused them nor what can be done about them. So in the end there isn't much I can discuss about.
It's also very hard to understand how that can be connected to a space agency, a mysterious incident on a ship, a corporation specialized in robotics, and so on.

This is probably supposed to keep me interested in the story, but it doesn't work that well. A mystery should be obscure enough to not be easily understood, but at the same time it might be clear enough to let people imagine the possible solutions.

I'll keep watching this anime because it's not like it's bad or anything, but it's just not particularly good either. I'll see if it gets better, there's a lot of episodes still.

R;N 06 - No, To Protect the Earth's Happiness

Nice to have the club fully assembled. Everyone has their own quirks, and they blend together fairly well, I think. I don't think Kai will notice, but I find it interesting that two members of the club only exist through iPads. Airi (so she's not a member, but close enough) and Frau, who may as well exist only through one, though I suspect she'll go outside before the series is over. The cheetah gag made me love Junna even more - Sora Tokui has a better range than I thought, though I still hear a bit of the old Nero voice in there. She's kind of like Ai Nonaka in that regard. A bit of drama at the end, sure - yet, I think this will only motivate Subaru more, once Akiho or somebody speechifies him out of it.

As for the other sci-fi elements, I wonder how long it's going to be before Kai informs the others of what's going on. A plot of this scale is bound to bleed over into the world tournament before long. Glad to see Aki making some progress on GunBuild, too. Of course the first things she wants are a star and a scarf - and maybe a rocket punch.
