One Piece - Chapter 649 [manga]
Welcome to the weekly manga discussion thread for One Piece.
Thread Guidelines
Yeah, time to get this party started! T provides the goods, and APforum's CCC translated the summary: -Chapter title is "Dance of the Bream and Flounder". The ministory shows Gan Fall and the Shandian chief hanging out. -The human pirates are freed from custody and Neptune allows the remaining fish-pirates to stay on the island.... but only as manual laborers. The fish-people district has been blocked off, and the ringleaders of the coup (Hody, Decken, and the officers) are all in prison. As for Wadatsumi, he's been deported from the island and is being escorted to a far-off part of the ocean by the kraken. -Jinbei refuses Luffy's request to join. He says he needs to fulfill his duties at the island for now, but is willing to join at a later time if Luffy asks him again. After that, everyone throws a party at the island. -Robin takes the opportunity to speak with Neptune while everyone else is partying. Her conversation with the king reveals that the mysterious "Joy Boy" was a person who was alive during the lost century. Furthermore, it turns out that the apology he left on the poneglyph was directed towards that era's mermaid princess. Neptune explains that according to legends passed down through the royal bloodline, someone would uphold Joy Boy's promise until the "promised day" would come, and it was necessary to guard Noah until said day came. -Robin reveals one more secret: She knew the location of the ancient weapon "Poseidon" from Skypiea's poneglyph. It was located at merman island all along. In fact, the weapon in question is actually the mermaid princess herself....!!!! Wow.... lots of information revealed this chapter. I suppose Shira being the weapon was something we should have seen coming, since Neptune even said her power was capable of destroying the world. But damn, now I'm more interested in Joy Boy than ever before! I hope we at least get a silhouette of him or something when the actual chapter is released..... And as for Jinbei..... I have nothing to add on that matter for the time being. |

Well, Jinbei clearly joins.
This arc is not over. Caribou is still around, the island needs to get destroyed according to Madam Shirley and we still don't know why Noah needs to be protected and what it is for ? (although at this point of the manga, it is predictable : Caribou and his treasure box will do something, Luffy will have to destroy the islands, and the fishmen will start living on Noah) No doubt Jinbei's duty will be accomplished once everything is over and he'll finally be free to join. |

Well, I've more or less decided that Shira will be the new addition to the crew. There is no way that she can be left to sit idle if she is an ultimate weapon of some sort. In fact, either she will simply leave with the Strawhats (after Neptune begs them to keep her safe now that her powers have emerged?), or the next arc will be dedicated to saving her from either Big Mam or the WG as they seek to control her. Either way, she will not be left to sit lounging around in her gilded cage any longer.

Something to note, though: If the island really does get destroyed, it doesn't actually have to happen now. For all we know, the deed in question could happen near the end of the series, when the WG takes its last stand against Luffy..... Quote:
Kind of related to the above response, but the WG/Yonkou probably won't be aware of Shira's power right away. I mean if that were the case, they should have done something when Otohime was alive (recall a world noble even saw her ability in action back then). And if they DID know about it, how do we know the elders wouldn't just conceal the info like they did after Blackbeard busted all those super-criminals out of prison.....? |

yep, neptune is the roman name of the greek god of the sea poseidon.
great chapter! awesome revelations! i can't say i was surprised by jinbei's response though. he's needed elsewhere. thank you oda for not giving in to all the clamor of the jinbei supporters.

yay jinbei didn't join! who knows how long this "later time" is... hopefully it's after OP ends... Oda probably used last week to gauge the responses from people with the idea of Jinbei joining... since the overall feeling was negative, that's y we got the refusal this week
imo, Shira will join because she needs protection like some people have said here. Plus the SHs need another female anyways... (time for Oda to come up with some size shrinking ideas)

Nah, that won't be necessary, to find something that shrinks Shirahoshi, it will be better if Franky reinforces and makes the Sunny bigger. Now they are about to head to the New World, I think this is the most appropiate time. |

another feast.... yay!
it's very funny to see Zoro has the same reasoning with Luffy about heroes and just like we predicted, Jimbei declines the offer... (and maybe will never join Strawhat... they just give an empty hope by saying will meet next time... lol) so now, where the hell is Caribou??? don't tell me there's another shocking event will occur so, Shirahoshi is an ancient weapon... and to keep her safe, Strawhat will bring her as a new member.... (that's my wish, Oda) |

Not surprised at Jimbei's refusal for the time being. Like I said before, I would prefer if he stays on FI fulfilling his duties, and Oda opted to go that route.
By far the most interesting things about this chapter are Joy Boy and Shirahoshi. Now I'm even more curious as to what Joy Boy was apologizing for during the void century and what exactly the "promised day" is. Shirahoshi being the poseidon weapon, while somewhat predictable based on the hints from previous chapters, is definitely the biggest revelation this chapter. I agree with James that someone of such importance cannot just sit idly by as the story progresses; Oda HAS to make her play a pivotal role in the story.
