Anime Expo 2022 to No Longer Require Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination or Negative Test

"The staff of the Anime Expo 2022 event revealed that attendees will no longer require attendees to show proof of vaccination for COVID-19 or a negative COVID-19 test taken 72 hours prior to attending the event. Regardless of vaccination status, masks will be required indoors (except in designated eating areas) and will be optional outdoors. Face coverings must fit snugly and properly, fully covering attendees' nose and mouth, and secure under the chin.

The staff notes that "these requirements and guidelines may be subject to change as more details emerge." The staff also states that "all guidelines and measures being put into place are driven by data provided by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).""

I had some great times covering A/X from the press side, but even by con standards it could be astonishingly ineptly run. I saw some shit go down, man...

Having traversed AX on that badge as press (on the rare occasions you get them to actually honor it on site) it always seemed overpriced to me. As a press member it would have been impossible to cover the event without it (which effectively meant it was impossible a lot of the time, since most of their people either didn't know press was supposed to be treated as premier or knew and actively refused to honor it), but if I had paid what they were asking I would certainly have felt shortchanged.

I know a lot of people who got it liked it for the priority access especially to hotels close to the event. A couple of people I knew with mobility issues would buy them for that reason.

As someone who lives in the area, the hotel perk is kind of useless to me as were most of the others.
Once several years ago I contemplated buying one for the next year just for the priority line access to events/panels after missing one to many of the ones I really wanted to see because of long lines. But, when they went up for sale the price was nearly double what it had been the previous year, and I noped right on out.

E3 and anime conventions are two entirely different beasts.

E3 is more geared towards the press, as it's about video game news and showing off upcoming games, with most video game companies opting to use other means to provide this information.

Anime conventions, meanwhile, are geared towards the fans, and while there's not as much industry involvement when compared to the past (with me feeling that they have lost a lot of the magic that it once had in the 2000's), there's still plenty of things for attendees to do at the con.

to Los Angeles on July 4-7, 2024."

Post-Mortem: How Was Anime Expo 2023?

"Anime News Network's editorial team braved the crowd and heat of
Los Angeles for another packed weekend at Anime Expo. The event
is always a logistical Rube Goldberg machine, with each reporter
integral in delivering a marble (in this case, news announcements,
on-the-ground reporting, and interviews) to anime fans far and wide.
No one person can attend every major event within the Los Angeles
Convention Center each day; even between the five of us, I had to
make judgment calls on what could feasibly be done while also
maintaining a reasonable workload between us all."

Now imagine being a lone reporter trying to cover the whole thing for your site, which is what I did for three years. It's as if the entire event is structured to drive you nuts.
