It looks like Thorkell hates French people, poor Kanon.

The historical Cnut ("Canute"):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cnut

Quote:
[Cnut] was King of England from 1016, King of Denmark from 1018, and King of Norway from 1028 until his death in 1035. The three kingdoms united under Cnut's rule are referred to together as the North Sea Empire.

With that said if people want some additional information on the actual battle in which Cnut beats Edmund and becomes King of England, here's a YouTube video about it with some "historical spoilers".

How dare ye! I was waiting for the anime to tell me that.

Re-watching that HistoryMarche video reminded me why Eadrics representation felt off to me. While I get none of the real life characters are 100% true to life, I always pictured Eadric as more of a weasel.

That's exactly what I thought when he said that line

Canute has grown up! No longer that little scared boy we saw in season 1. He has so much determination, confidence, and resolve. Felt a bit bad for Thorkell not getting any of his combat action while the kings fell. Such a great episode to showcase Canute's leadership, planning, tactics, and negotiation skills.

Canute recognizing Thorkell's yelling from miles away has to be one of the most accidentally hilarious scenes ever

We now return to our previously scheduled Farmland Saga with Thorfinn and Einar! And you can't beat the sight of buff, shirtless, men putting their all into moving a tree stump! Of course, that's unfortunately not practical, so they need a horse, as the title indicates .

Still, rough going for slaves on the farm. Denied the resources you need and still looked down on for your less-than-human status .

Is it just me or does Thorfinn seem more...lively? His interactions with Einar feel more natural and it feels like he's more alive now than he's been in forever. Of course Einar still has energy and a temper to spare, and Einar keep spurring Thorfinn on to not settle for less than then they deserve !

So the old man Snake was hanging around was Sverkel. He's a pretty firm and crotchety old man, but he puts his work in at the farm all the same, and he rewards those who act similarly. He seems like a pretty fair and reasonable guy, be you slave or anything, and it makes him stand out all the more once we find out he's Ketil's father and the farm is basically his .

I love how one horse is like "did you really think you would be worthy of me?" While another horse was "get your hands off me, human" .

Oh yeah, when Thorfinn wasn't razing farms, he comes from a fishing village. This is all new to him. Luckily Einar is there to give him the basics and help him discover the beauty of Farmland life !

There's tension between father and son, both men seemingly too stubborn to back down even if there's still that level of familial care in-between their shouting at each other. Although it definitely doesn't beat the lively banter between Sverkel and Snake. Those two feel like they could go at at it all day .

Just in case you thought Snake's group just sat around and enjoyed the perks of the farm without putting the work in (and maybe partake in some young ladies while they're at it), they do actually stop plenty of thieves. In fact there might not be enough of them for the amount of work they have to do, especially if a bigger group ever came after the farm (does that feel like foreshadowing to anyone else)? Ketil thinks he's cool because of his tribute to King Harald (just look at Thorfinn's face when he sees the name) but to Sverkel the Farm has become too big and become too obsessed with wealth for it's own good .

Thorfinn and Einar with beards! Thorfinn and Einar are officially friends! Thorfinn genuinely smiling! I love it !!!

Was it something I ate, or were the character models way off this episode? Thorfinn hardly ever looked himself. And what was that with the beards? Not enough time had passed for them to cultivate those whiskers. Maybe I'm just hallucinating.

In the manga they reveal the months when this was taking place: it was September in the beginning of the episode and it was October when they were seeding at the end. Of course it doesn't say the exact week or day so this episode could have covered a few weeks, a month or almost two months. I'm guessing most of the plowing took place during September and the actual seeding was at some point in October, hence the full beards.

Although personally I'm impressed they were able to wear such thin clothing in Denmark during Autumn.

As for Thorfinn I think he just looks different with a ponytail, you can now see his entire face for the first time since... he was a kid, I think?

The overgrown baby grows a beard and is amazed at farming contraptions! If only he could be transported in time to play the Farming Simulator videogame haha.

Seemed like a slow episode, but we met the important old guy who delivers the quote of the episode where having too much wealth is not good. So true, even in this day and age.

I hope the horse got fed/compensated well for all the hard work it put in. Einar really loving that horse.

The OP has over a million views on Youtube but the ED hasn't even broken 100k. Very unfair. I love both but I prefer the ED, the lyrics fit the series and LMYK speaks English perfectly.

As for the episode, it was good stuff. I didn't remember Snake being such a cool dude, but I think I have him confused with another character. I liked how much it highlighted the importance of the horse. Where would we be without animals to help us?

Well, we already saw the answer for that in real life.
Lacking domesticated animals is one of the big reasons why America was so technologically inferior to the Old World.
When the Europeans showed up, the natives were still in the Bronze Age.

A beard created through friendship. Still, I heard there would be another animated short.

The chapters at the beginning of Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond spend a lot of time on the distribution of domesticable animals across the world. There are, as I recall, only seven such species. In the Western hemisphere they were mostly animals like llamas and alpacas in South America.

I also found his comparison of the "vertical" Western Hemisphere versus the "horizontal" Eurasian continent very enlightening. Goods and ideas could spread much more easily in the latter.
