Pluto

Plot Summary:
Quote:
Based off of a story arc from Osamu Tezuka's Tesuwan Atom, Pluto follows the Europol detective Gesicht as he tries to uncover the mystery behind a string of robot and human deaths. The case becomes much more puzzling when evidence leans toward the murders being the work of a robot, which is something that hasn't happened for 8 years.

So apparently, the manga "Pluto" is getting an anime adaptation according to a poster at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in France.

Pretty interesting considering that fans of the manga always hoped to see one.

So this is going to be at M2 studio, aka Maruyama Masao's studio.

Holy shit! Never thought this would be animated, read the manga about 6 months ago, loved it. Especially since the Astro Boy arc it's based on was a fav of mine when I was young, but even discounted that it was fantastic.

Hope it's done justice.

If I remember right, Maruyama mentioned that it is unlikely to see Pluto anime before 2020. Unless he unexpectedly got funding...

Is that confirmed? Because that was my immediate thought - I know Maruyama has been struggling to get this adapted before he passes away (which he expects to happen soon). I'm desperate to see it happen, but it would have been bittersweet indeed if M2 weren't involved.

Pluto is so good. So, so fucking good. If Maruyama is behind it, I trust it won't be screwed up.

I'm not very familiar with Astro Boy/Atom, but Pluto was a spectacular tale and worked perfectly as a stand alone story. People shouldn't be afraid to jump in head first.

So apparently, it will debut in 2020 with 8 long episodes.

Maruyama had said it needed 39 eps, and he's right. So unless these 8 eps are really, really long, it's going to require serious cuts.

But, any Pluto anime is a good thing, and I really want Maruyama to live to see this happen. I'll take what I can get.

I don't think he ever said that, he said that the adaptation should be 8 hours long and if the reports are true each episode should just be 1 hour long, which would fit his previous statement.

Edit: found an interview with Maruyama where he talks about Pluto adaptation, says he would do it in 8 hour long episodes. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/conv...2012/otakon/11

He did say 39 for years, but clearly he's adjusting his expectations based on practical reality. 8 hours is way, way short for this material - especially if these are 44 minute "hours", or basically double episodes.

Still - the whole point is, Maruyama has always contended that getting funding for a proper adaptation of such an non-commercial source in the modern climate would be next to impossible. So if he's lowering his sights a bit in order to get this done while he's still around to shepherd it through, how can one be anything but admiring? This is a great man, one of anime's staunchest defenders of ambition and artistic integrity. He deserves to see Pluto happen, even if it's an abridged version.

He's clearly been saying 8 hours for years. Maruyama is of a dying breed that can get material to work in the time they want to do it in.
