The Iraq Conflict

Time for this subject to get its own thread.

Iraq crisis: ISIS advances on Baquba as U.S. moves firepower to region:

"As Islamic militants continue their murderous advance across Iraq, they have a new
target in their sights: the city of Baquba, less than 40 miles north of Baghdad.

Gunbattles erupted in the city, only a 45-minute drive from the capital, on Tuesday as
fighters and Iraqi government forces clashed."

Wow, Iraq’s Military Is Sad:

"Militant group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria’s strategy in its expanding invasion
of western Iraq are quite simple. ISIS induces terror with gruesome acts of
savagery—and then takes advantage of the government’s sectarian infighting
and infiltrates cracks in the army’s defenses.

ISIS captured Mosul on June 10 without having to do much intensive fighting.
Divided, leaderless and afraid, the Iraqi army retreated after a few brief
skirmishes, leaving itself exposed to pursuing militants.

The Iraqi army lost fewer than 100 men in the initial stages of Islamists’ offensive.
It lost another 2,000 during its pell-mell retreat."

Humiliation at rout hits Iraqi military hard:

"The Iraqi soldiers tell of how they can hardly live with the shame of their rout
under the onslaught of the Islamic militants. Their commanders disappeared.
Pleas for more ammunition went unanswered. Troops ran from post to post only
to find them already taken by gunmen, forcing them to flee."

Top Iraq Officers Booted After Fall of Mosul to Sunni Militants:

"Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki on Tuesday fired four of his top security officers
for abandoning their "professional and military duty," a week after the fall of
Mosul to Sunni militants, according to a government statement read on state
television."

Iraqi Forces Can Hold Baghdad, Pentagon Says:

"Fighters from the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria are bearing down on Baghdad,
reportedly as close as 30 miles away, but Pentagon officials believe Iraqi security
forces will hold the nation’s capital.

“We’re seeing indications that Iraqi security forces in and around Baghdad are
stiffening … that’s encouraging,” Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby said
Tuesday. The Iraqi troops are being helped by Shiite militias, but Kirby couldn’t
say how many. “It certainly appears that they have the will to defend the
capital.”"

US-made Stinger missiles have likely fallen into ISIS hands, officials say:

"U.S. officials with access to the latest U.S. intelligence on Iraq told Fox News it
"appears likely/probable" that U.S.-made Stinger missiles have fallen into the
hands of Sunni insurgents.

It is possible that the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) fighters acquired them
from army bases they have taken over in recent days, the sources said."

US flying F-18 surveillance missions over Iraq, Obama reviews options with
lawmakers:

"The United States is flying F-18 surveillance missions over Iraq from an
aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf, officials confirm to Fox News, as
President Obama weighs options for "increased security assistance" in the
country.

The surveillance missions are being launched from the USS George HW Bush. It
was already known that the Obama administration had authorized "manned and
unmanned" surveillance flights, but F-18's are not traditional surveillance
aircraft -- they are attack aircraft.

"It's not so much about looking as it is being seen," a U.S. official told Fox
News."

Saddam Hussein's Old Party Is Behind A Lot Of The Chaos In Iraq:

"ISIS managed to achieve their blitz across Iraq by forming an unlikely
coalition with upwards of 41 different armed Sunni groups throughout the
country. Though ideologically diverse, the groups had all grown tired of
Baghdad's preferential treatment of the Shia majority in the country.

Among the more noteworthy of the parties aligned with ISIS is the Army of the
Men of the Naqshbandi Order.

The Naqshbandis, located primarily in Mosul, were formed in 2007 by former
members of Saddam Hussein's Baath party. Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, Saddam's
former deputy and the head of the Baath party following Saddam's execution in
2007, is in charge of the group.

Douri has been in hiding since the U.S. invasion of Iraq, and he managed to
evade capture despite a $10 million bounty for his capture or death. Douri was
the king of spades in decks of playing cards distributed to U.S. soldiers
during the American invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Today, Douri is openly directing operations of the Naqshbandis in Mosul."

Iraq Official Says Iran's Military Mastermind Is In Charge:

"A former CIA operative described Qassem Suleimani, the head of Iran's Quds
Force, as the "most powerful operative in the Middle East today."

Qassem Suleimani, the head of the Qods Force, the foreign arm of Iran's
Revolutionary Guards Corps, is leading the Iraqi reaction to a radical Islamist
group's takeover of much of the country, according to a senior Iraqi official
quoted by The Guardian.

"Who do you think is running the war? Those three senior generals who ran
away?" the unnamed official asked The Guardian's Martin Chulov. "Qassem
Suleimani is in charge. And reporting directly to him are the militias, led by
Asa'ib ahl al-Haq.""

Is the A-10 Right for Iraq?:

"The battle over the future of the A-10 has largely centered around the Air

environment. Proponents of the “Warthog” dispute that, and point to the types
of mission the plane still performs to protect troops on the ground today –
missions they say perfectly fit with battling ISIL forces if President Obama
gives the ok for airstrikes."

Time for this subject to get its own thread.
Why?

You make no attempt whatsoever to discuss anything and you are simply copy/pasting stuff from news sites. Heck, even the headlines are copy/pastes from other sites. As it is, I fail to see the difference from this and the news thread.

If you are only going to post links without adding anything to them, then please continue posting them in the news thread as you used to.
