Also, has no: tabs and options for encoding (that I can see)
Vim has tabs.

And I'd be pretty surprised if you couldn't manipulate the encoding (though it's not something I do too often, so I really don't know).

What's wrong with Notepad++? Just curious. It seems to have all the features you requested.

I never said there was anything wrong with it. But anyway: bugs, compromises, 100 features I will never need, a lot of features that do not work as I want them, it's style (skins/oraganisation/menus) etc.

doesn't support opening files with encodings other than unicode or the current locale

speaking of which, I'd like some tips for a text editor other than emeditor that can do this

Notepad++ has a very good plugin for that. I suggest using that.

I use PSPad for a lot of stuff, though I tend to use it primarily with Unicode. I dunno how well it works with other encodings, however it might have what you're looking for.

I'm loving SciTe and its deviations like Notepad2 (good design phylosophy, such as Keep It Simple & Stupid).

A good site to search for alternatives is: http://wakoopa.com/ It's a social software umm "sharing" social network rpg something site ~ users install a tracking program and the site keeps statistics of what programs they use. There is no fixed list of programs, the site will only filter programs such as very system-like programs (things like Explorer etc are not filtered) and of course users are free to filter with their own criteria (some more filtering options should be available in the future, according to some discussions I followed). The site also tracks "internet application", things like: wordpress, openid, etc

The site is updated as new programs get used (you get points for discovery in their reputation system), so its always up to date (you may find some very weird programs in the listings).

I personally like watching statistics on wakoopa for things like browsers etc, so much more un-biased then so called "surveys".

If you use vi, Vim should be able to handle any encoding. See 'encoding' tag in help.

Install CCCP and use either MPC or ZoomPlayer. Or, install mplayer that little program will play anything, even heavily corrupted files.

If you're on Windows, you should first try smplayer, an excellent mplayer GUI packaged with the player itself. It's easier to navigate than vanilla mplayer.

does anyone know of a good program to take the sound track of an AVI or MKV and make it a stand alone audio file?

I'm not sure if it's the most convenient way, but anyway:

- For MKV files, use "MKVExtractGUI" (google it)

- For non-MKV files (AVI, MP4 etc), use "MKVMerge"* to convert to MKV first, then use tool above

*) This is part of "mkvtoolnix" (google it), which you may need for MKVExtractGUI too. MKVMerge is "mmg.exe"

Internet Explorer 8, Safari 4 Beta and Google Chrome. What all three have in common is that they have a private browsing mode but which one uses the less resources for XP sp2?

Firefox has a private browsing mode. IE is probably the correct answer to your question however. Do expect a lot of resource consumtion to be taken by plugins like Flash and Java.
