Black Clover (TV series)

Plot Summary:
Quote:
Asta and Yuno were abandoned together at the same church, and have been inseparable since. As children, they promised that they would compete against each other to see who would become the next Emperor Magus. However, as they grew up, some differences between them became plain. Yuno was a genius with magic, with amazing power and control, while Asta could not use magic at all, and tried to make up for his lack by training physically. When they received their Grimoires at age 15, Yuno got a spectacular book with a four-leaf clover (most people receive a three-leaf-clover), while Asta received nothing at all. However, when Yuno was threatened, the truth about Asta's power was revealed, he received a five-leaf clover Grimoire, a "black clover"! Now the two friends are heading out in the world, both seeking the same goal!
Not a big a surprise but a TV anime version of "Black Clover" has been announced. Coming for year 2017.

Studio will be Pierrot.

As expected, they changed the cast from the special. Asta now will be vocied by Gakuto Kajiwara (first named role, had a small role in one of the episodes of Eromanga sensei) and Yuno will be voiced by Nobunaga Shimazaki (I think most people here know him). I quite liked Shun Horie as Asta, let's see how his new voice will work. And I think Shimazaki will be a better Yuno than Soma Saito.

First episode is out.

Sad to say, it's not really new content if you've seen the OVA episode already. Wish they didn't use so much footage. As a standalone (assuming you didn't see the OVA episode yet), it did introduce the basic principles so far.

I expect pacing to pick up next week.

Edit: Yes, I also can't stand Asta's voice, at least from this episode.

Wow. So this is supposed to be the big new thing? An orphan kid wants to become the leader of his people by proving himself to be powerful enough to lead, winds up finding himself to be so weak that everyone laughs, constantly makes an ass of himself with his loud "personality", and ultimately reveals himself to be powerful because of some manner of "demon" within. I don't care if his power is supposed to be "different" (in that it's a type of power separate from your standard explosive frenzy but still fairly common), I'm still not seeing anything new so far.

And this first episode helps sink in to me how funny it is that people will raise up Shounen heroes as being their own character or having "tons" of "personality" while declaring harem heroes to completely lack personality and just be self-insert characters. News flash, this is no less an audience avatar than the harem "prota-kun" people often sneer at. He's not demonstrated to be full of character, he's just the same cookie-cutter crap with the same personal struggles that all other Shounen heroes have. Rather than Shounen heroes having lots of personality and harem heroes having little, it seems more accurate to me to say that Shounen heroes have "loud" or "flamboyant" personalities while harem heroes' personalities are quieter and more subdued. Both satisfy a form of wish-fulfillment while not really displaying all that much uniqueness or personal character. One is by default loud, prone to jump and shout like youths often want, with occasional moments of softness to show they really want peace or acceptance, after which they go back to the focus of working their butts off to get what they want. The other is by default quiet, peaceful and often displaying more concern for the happiness of others than his own, but with a tendency born from this to then get very loud and forceful if someone needs help. This shift in defaults and accents means that the Shounen hero is always "cool", part of big action scenes where his strength can be shown, with some bits of sensitivity to show something hiding beneath the surface, whereas the harem hero is always nice and gentle, part of stuff that shows he's willing to defer to others and take the short straw, with moments of extreme passion to show that when something needs to be done, he indeed will not hesitate to do it. Neither really has more true personality or originality than the other, whether by accident or design to act as a character who does what the audience wishes they could do, and either saves the day and proves his value time and again or occasionally saves a few and brings those few to recognize his worth.

That said, the Shounen series differ a lot more in terms of situation than character. In a harem, there's often a little bit (sometimes a VERY little bit) less hard threat to allow more focus on the softness and show people coming to notice and recognize him without him doing anything too far above and beyond his capabilities, while Shounen is more about showing hard action and having the hero force people to look by pushing himself far beyond any level of reasonable effort until only a god or demon could remain alive and standing.

Anyway, this is only the first episode. Who knows, maybe he'll actually turn out to be a truly and properly unique character with personality beyond shouting and raging/crying over his own weakness. Or maybe a story will develop that'll be cool enough to make it worth it in spite of him being just as empty as the worst harem protagonists. I generally adhere to the rule of giving a show at least three episodes after all. But this first episode at the least left me thinking nothing more than "is that it?"

Pretty good start. Though my ears will bead some time to recover from all that screaming...

Also shame miss nun probably isn't heroine, she is definitely wasted for cloth if you ask me.

First episode in and I already dislike Asta constant screaming. I mean, I like hot-blooded characters but even they have an indoor voice and their shout tend have a nice manly growl tone.

Asta's shrieking is hurting my ears.

It worked for Griffith and Guts; and Naruto and Sasuke. It'll prob work for Astra and Yuno. I mention Griffith and Guts due to Yuno being perfect with the mysterious necklace and Astra inheriting a dark grimoire (demon) and sounding like an immature/beserker-type character.

Well...the OVA fight was left to the 2nd episode. So the awesomeness of Astra fighting won't be revealed until next week.

Asta's voice sounds like a parrot trying to imitate Nobuyuki Hiyama
Though I can't say it doesn't fit the character.

Asta's constant yelling is annoying. I get that he's supposed to be the hot blooded type, but 90% of his dialogue here was yelling.

I tried the manga when it was first released in the US but couldn't make it through the first volume. I may have better luck making it through the anime. I enjoyed the first episode. I'd enjoy it more if Astra learned to not yell every time he opened his mouth though.
