You are supposed to hate that woman. I think the anime's trying to give you more reason to hate her. There's no use giving Eren additional pressure telling him that the soldiers are dying for "his sake". As Pixis mentioned, it was a do or die plan. Even if the armoured titan doesn't show up and break wall rose, there's bound to be a rebellion brewing. People will die, and it is the duty of a soldier to prevent civilians from dying. As Pixis said during his speech,the soldiers aren't doing what they've done for Eren's sake, they are doing it for humanity , "their families "and themselves. You win you survive, you lose you die.

Besides that, since most of the troops are basically luring the titans to the walls, casualties are minimal.

Shingeki definitely needed a badass old man like Pixis. And after slight breather last episode and part of this one the ball gets rolling again, now it's humanity turn to finally strike back.

...or that was the idea until Eren decided to attack Mikasa...I guess such power is not easily controlled after all.

keep in mind that while Rico's speech did not appear here in the manga, it's pretty much similar to another speech told to eren down the line in the story.

I think it is quite possible that Eren-Titan (or "Erangelion" how many like to call him) only attacks Misaka and no one else.

His first transformation happened after he showed immense hatred against the titans and the result was that he attacked titans and ignored everything else...

Before the transformation where Eren is supposed to move the boulder, he was arguing with Misaka that she should leave him be and not treat him like some little kid. He also showed a lot of aggression towards her when he was saying that. The result is as you see: Titan-Eren ignores everything else and tries to smash Misaka.

Pixis is incredible as a high-commander that deserve all my respect.

Overall he did 4 major things:

1) He decide to listen to what Armin have to say about using Eren power and decide to take a gamble in executing Armin sketchy plan

2) He mades Eren firm and determine in using his Titan power to help mankind to fight back

3) His grand speech convince the shaken troops that the only option they have is not to run away but to stay and fight to prevent the fall of Wall Rose. He uses the feeling of guilt and the desire of the soldier to protect their family and love ones to stay back to fight.

4) I also like how he made the elite team to put away their doubt and try to belief in his plan to win against the titan. Its a very skillful approach to avoid the elite team question on the doubt of success of his plan while getting them hype up to execute the plan.

Yeah, the first half of this episode I thought moved along pretty well because it was about the rallying speech. Total awesomeness! That was a highpoint and honestly makes him more of a badass than any fighting tricks could have.

Second speech though was a total bore and I feel like the 3D maneuver slinging was kinda wasted 'cause it got you excited but then cut out to the cliff hanger...

Her speech is filler, they didn't even get through 1 chapter in the manga this time so they had extra animation time to fill. I expect to see extra death filler scenes not in the manga from the next ep too so i personally think this is a filler that leads into the importantce of another filler. So a well planned filler i guess? :P

And this is exactly what I mean when I say I hate some of the changes they did with the manga.

Eren and Mikasa never argued in the manga, it was assumed that she got automatically chosen for the elite team (as common sense would dictate). Someone just decided to reuse the exact same headbutt scene from episode 5 for filler.

As a result, the anime misleads into believing that Eren might have attacked Mikasa because he was still mad at her. And the Rico lecture the director decided to add? It was way too forced and over-dramatic, everyone already knew what was at stake with Pixis' speech.

The segment with Eren drinking liquor and spitting it out was also anime original. But compared to the previous stuff, this one was in-character, funny, wasn't obnoxious and also also didn't deceive people.

There is too much filler... urgh... and since they often go through the events in a different way than the manga, I cannot even do a "check up" on the manga after an anime episode aired.

this episode is based on chapter 12 if anyone is interested. To be honest i originally expected they put the last 2 chapters into 1 episode instead of this 1:1 pace since obviously that they have to end an episode on this cliffhanger. Now with 2 more episodes to the end of the arc (with ep"14" being the recap ep), I have no idea how they will approach those episodes
