Afro Samurai
Genre: Action, Samurai Production Company: Gonzo Expected Release Date: November 2006 Website: http://www.afrosamurai.com/ I am excited from the title alone. On the downside it's a Gonzo production, but since it is a 5 episodes OVA, may be they will keep their creativity in check. The website has a few more cool images. Synopsis of the story as taken from AniDB in the following: The tale of Afro Samurai is one of bloody hardship and pain. Along his solitary path of revenge for his murdered father, he sheds no tears and knows no love. Forever chased by powerful enemies in a lawless technology-speckled dystopia, he evades bullets and blade to reach his final prey: a man who will not die. But Afro will reach his quarry - even if it means painting a road of blood and brains from here to the bitter inevitable end. Last edited by monir; 2007-01-02 at 17:52. Reason: updated picture link |

Nice concept.
One of the better drawn animes ive seen in awhile. Poor choice of a VA, I think his voice will completly ruin this show/movie, whatever it is, it sounds horrible in the trailer. I cant find any info on this thing though, is it a series? movie? NA? JP? manga based? |

Well, you could start with IGN's website. They did a whole series of articles on this title.

Taken from Wiki
Afro Samurai is a Japanese dōjinshi manga series, created by Takashi Okazaki, originally featured in the Nononhow dōjin magazine, which has adapted into an 5-episode anime television series, produced by Japanese animation studio GONZO, and set to air in November 2006. The anime series is set to feature noted American actor Samuel L. Jackson as the voice of the titular character, as well as one of the co-producers, and will also feature Wu-Tang Clan member RZA as the provider of the original musical score. T The series has been slated for 5 episodes and is set to air across the United States across Spike TV and Japan on Fuji Television. The series has also been licensed for North American distribution by Funimation, whose first DVD release is planned for early 2007. In August 2005, Japan-based game developers Namco announced they would be releasing Afro Samurai-related video games across both Japan and America. Theme : The TV anime series will be set in a "futuristic, yet feudal Japan," and star a black samurai named Afro. The story will follow Afro as he tries to avenge his father's murder. It looks like it will air with English language and Japanese subtitles in Japan. Maybe the DVD release will have a Japanese language track.

Just saw episode 1 today. The visual effects were very good. The story was not as sophisticated as I had hoped. However I will keep watching,it's easy enough when there's only 5 episodes.
Based on just the first episode, it was unusual experience to watch an anime were the primary and initially produced language is english. A mildly disappointing aspect was the english lip flaps weren't always in synch with the character voices, which was something I was expecting to be better and more polished than most TV anime, given the big budget for this show. I guess Afro Samurai was produced with the usual Japanese animation method of animating the lip flaps first, and then later having the voice actors perform the dialogue as best as they can to match the lip flaps. But how will a Japanese language track be any better when the initial language and lip flaps-which were't always in synch for episode 1- are in english? Are you talking about better quality voice actors? |
